Just How Nice are Catgirls, Anyway?

Steven and I have been going back and forth over the Catheans in Aso ni bi Ikuyo. I have to warn readers that this is necessarily going to contain a huge amount of spoilers, one or two quite specific, so if you haven’t seen it all the way to the end, stop reading here.

I Have the POWER!!!

Yup, bad power supply. It’s no thorium salt reactor, but Antec’s 750 watt power supply was enough to get the job done. Minor quibble, it’s big; I had to unship the top fan and could barely get it back in place. There’s a hair’s breadth between the modular power jack and the fan blades.

Well, that would help…

Discovered that my registration link was missing… because I turned it off to avoid spammers. Sigh. Ok, it’s back on. Hit the login link, and a “register” link will appear at the bottom of the password blank.

Hardware Bleg…

Well, it looks like I need some help. I’ve forgotten almost all the hardware stuff I thought I knew, and now I’ve got a broken computer.

There’s no beeper installed, so I don’t have an error code to work with, but the system simply does not work. I am sure it’s not the monitor, but I don’t have a spare video card to determine if that’s the issue. I get a black screen, without any POST test at all. I shifted the video card to the other PCI-E slot, no change. I unplugged drive after drive, thinking it might be the boot drive (I had a second bootable I thought might come up), no luck. The motherboard works to the point of sensing the temperature of the CPU and kicking the fan on after a few minutes. But that’s all I get.

I can hunt up a beeper and install it if needed, but based on the above, can anyone give me some clues to go on?

Update: Ok, I reinstalled the beeper. Most of the time I get a series of continuous short beeps, really clicks. According to the manual, this is a power problem. Plausible; I have 3 HD’s, a DVD R/W, and a GT 9600 video card, plus 2 extra fans, and it’s only a 500w power supply. Disconnecting various combinations of the above twice generated a single beep that didn’t stop, and a POST that ended with “no boot drive” or “file missing” message depending on which drive was still hooked up. One of the drives was formerly a boot drive and still has the MBR, so I’m not surprised at the latter, but at no time did I ever get the system to completely boot. I tried the video in both PCI-E slots, only in one of them did I get that far. According to the manual, one long beep is a video problem, though it says nothing about it not stopping. Unfortunately, I have no other PCI-E cards to try, and the motherboard does not have built-in video.

Update 2: And 8 GB of RAM.

Looks Like We Got a Cling-on, Captain

So I was just preparing to write a post (not about Railgun, as I promised) when I noticed a Twitter pingback from someone called “otakusphere.” I checked it out… looks like another one of those stupid machine aggregators trying to game the search engines, as I see no content, just link after link to other anime sites.

It’s either a very limited machine, or a very limited human however… every one of the links I saw, except one, was to a site in the Chizumatic blogroll. On the other hand, that one exception was a great article on Summer Wars over at Schoolgirl Milky Crisis, so I don’t count looking at the Twitter site a total loss.

Update: Indeed, as Steven points out, it was Otaku-kun, a.k.a Otakusphere, a.k.a Fledgling Otaku, who has turned in his fledgling badge after several years of being an anime fan. Apologies for running off at the mouth….

Index, not Railgun

Like some others, I was disappointed that the new series will be a sequel to the Index series, not Railgun. The reason seems to be, that aside from the Sisters Arc (which we’ve already seen from one side) the source materials largely follow Touma and Index — though Mikoto and Kuroko appear a lot too. The Railgun manga scanlation has now reached the point where Touma and Mikoto have met on the bridge just before she plans to fight Accelerator and die. I’d considered her plan a failure of imagination and poor writing when we saw it in the series, but my criticism was misplaced; the manga has done an excellent job of explaining that. What happens here is too long for spoiler tags, so I’m putting it below the fold; if you’re on RSS, Spoilers Ahead! Stop Reading NOW!

Princess Lover Notes

Seeing mention of Princess Lover (and how many brain cells one put at risk for watching it) over at Steven’s resulted in my going back and watching a few episodes again. The girls were really sexy, although the maid was more cute than sexy. I also didn’t believe half of what happened — as in, it just wasn’t credible at times. In the very first episode, Teppei and Charlotte fall what appears to be hundreds of feet off a cliff and land unharmed–evidently because they fell through trees. Everyone knows that trope, right?
