Civilization V

So one of the reasons for the slowdown in posting after last week’s burst is that I’ve picked up Civilization V. I’ve played the heck out of this series since the first one, and noticed a pattern (if you could call it that). The game would introduce new elements with the odd numbered editions, and then perfect them on the even number editions. Civ I was good, II was similar and great. Civ III was…um, IV was similar but great.

This time, they’ve broken the pattern. They changed up the game again, and made it great on the first try. I think I like it. Mostly.

Like:
Wonders and resources have been de-emphasized. It’s no longer “I must have this or I lose.”
No mega stacks of artillery. No stacking period.
Maneuver actually plays a part in war.
Revamped tech tree vs. benefits. There are no more useless techs that waste time, nor huge advantage swings from getting to a key tech earlier than anyone else.
Cities can defend themselves.
Wonders don’t go obsolescent.
Revamped civics. No more “well, I’ll wait until I can get slavery and …” I forget what the other one was, but I’d always do the first revolt for them.
No freaking revolts to change civics!
Removal of the religions de-emphasizes the early tech race and means more variety.
Easier to make money.
I feel like the victory conditions may be more balanced, but won’t know until I reach a level that’s truly challenging (blowout on Chieftain to learn the game, a bit more trouble on Prince but I’m winning handily.)
Fight animations.
Not having to deal with building/marshaling transport craft.

Don’t like:
Steam.
That damn movie! It’s pointless to hack the .ini to bypass it, because it takes the game forever to load anyway.
Did I mention that it takes the game forever to load?
Steam.
I think there’s some cruft accumulation…the ability of the system to keep from getting bogged down seems to be related to the number of times I reload from saves.
Steam.
Lack of world design options. There’s Continents, Archipelago, and not much else. I hope player mods come out soon.
Steam.
Steam.
STEAM.

So there you have it! Civ V is a great game, with one crappy flaw that would have resulted in my not buying it had I noticed it.

Did I mention that I HATE Steam? A DRM that forces me to log on to their servers to play a game on MY computer?

The Bad Girls of Noble Masters

A draft from long, long ago, when I was having problems taking screenshots. Which I’ve now gone back and done, so I thought, “what the hell, why not.” So here you are.

So episode 6 contained a bunch of silly fantasy segments, all centering around Yume writing manga and trying to find what her personality is. Being outshone by her older sisters was getting kind of wearing for her, it seems.

Lots of parodies: Death Note, Haruhi, etc. They were generally bad, so the others stepped in and tried to help with their versions…One of the segments involved the other females of the series being a “bad girls” motorcycle gang. Which was silly enough, but then this picture of Shinra-sama flashed on the screen — just as I was trying to swallow half of a stuffed jalepeno pepper.

Bad timing. Bad, bad timing.

Not even for yours, sweetie. But I might accept a mild injury... oh wait, I did. That chesee was HOT!

Update: Decide for yourself. From the hentai game. WARNING: VERY NSFW!

Gregorian Calendar in Error

In looking at the calendar widget to the right, I have found an error, which I am currently coding a revision to fix. In looking through the remainder of the month, I noticed that there is an extra day between Wednesday and Friday. This day, called Thursday, serves no known purpose, except to annoy people with desk jobs. I am therefore removing it from the calendar. All employees are notified that we will proceed directly from Wednesday to Friday, effective immediately. Therefore today’s date is now Friday, October 1st.

Princess Lover OVA

So I checked the revived TokyoTosho, and sure enough, there were several subtitled versions of the Princess Lover’ OVA out. For those of you who missed the notice, it’s part one (of two) of a hentai adaptation of the hentai dating sim of the same name. There was a 2009 TV series, which wasn’t exactly spectacular in its brilliant plotting, but was pretty good for fanservice, especially the DVD version.

So I downloaded it and gave it a whirl… It’s not going to win any Academy Awards, but I actually found it decent. What surprised me was that they actually managed to work in enough characterization to make them, well, interesting. Now obviously, there’s not a lot of time for character development, and the plot is pretty minimal. (In a nutshell: They have sex. Then they have sex. Then they have sex again.) And yet… despite that, I found myself responding to the characters. Oh, not like that, get your mind out of the gutter.

Well ok, not just like that.

The episode starts with Sylvie waking up “the morning after” in Teppei’s bed. She puts on his shirt, then tries to pretend to be asleep when he comes back in, but Teppei isn’t fooled. They talk a bit, and Sylvie’s all, “Well, yes, I did enjoy it, but I don’t think we should take anything for granted,” etc. and she goes to take a shower. Teppei opportunistically goes for the morning glory, over the most perfunctory objections. Then we jump to later, at school, for a bit of exposition and character development. Some talk, some interaction between Yuu and Sylvie, and another sex scene, this time with Sylvie and Teppei in the Arima limo. Only this time she’s changed into a maid outfit and engages in some forceful tsundere seduction, interspersed with flashbacks to sex between Teppei & Yuu, and finally coming full circle to Sylvie and Maria’s (the imouto) arrival at Teppei’s to spend a couple of nights.

Sylvie theorizes that Dad’s not exactly being an innocent fool, but seems unhappy with the matter. Maria goes “Don’t say it like you don’t want it … My sister is such a tsundere!” *Bonk!* This leads up to the night before the morning after, and much boinking as opposed to bonking, but thankfully, the loli is long gone by this point. Upon this note, part 1 finally ends. Neither Charlotte nor Seika are ever mentioned; it’s strictly a triangle between the maid, the princess, and the heir. And when she overheard Yuu trying to wake Teppei by bending over him with a soft, “I know you’re very tired, but please,” did that ever get a glare. Just why is he tired and why do you know?

In between all this is what makes it work as a story. Teppei’s origin isn’t addressed directly, but it’s obviously the same as the series and (I assume) the game: Teppei is from a rather ordinary upbringing. He’s not entirely comfortable among the rarefied society that Sylvie’s used to, and he isn’t sure he belongs there. Yuu, on the other hand, intends to make a man out this insecure boy by the rather simple expedient of, well, making a man out of him — which we see in flashbacks. She’s staked her happiness on it, and Sylvie knows this — and Yuu knows she knows about them, which makes her feel a bit guilty, as Yuu is afraid she’s getting in Sylvie’s way. Sylvie doesn’t fully believe Yuu’s not after Teppei for herself (and maybe she’s right) which fuels her jealous and passive-aggressive maid costume seduction in the limo. I found it slightly funny, in a silly way, as they were on the street right in front of the school, and Teppei had even waved to some of the girls from the back seat as Sylvie started making moves on him. But when Teppei objected, Sylvie obliquely made the point that people wouldn’t see her; they’d just see him being serviced by one of his maids. Which makes me wonder just how much and where he’s been getting it on with Yuu.

The thing is, Sylvie’s not just a bit jealous; she’s got her own problems. Sylvie’s very conscious of her status — not as in arrogance, but in that she doesn’t believe that she deserves happiness, only her duty as a knight and princess. So at the same time that Yuu is trying to boost Teppei’s self-esteem, Teppei is trying to convince Sylvie that she has a right to be happy, and he’s willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be her happiness. Of course, he’s haunted by the suspicion that he may not be “good enough” for her, which leads back to Yuu’s method of supporting him, which leads back to Sylvie’s jealousy. It made the show surprisingly accessible as a story, not just an excuse for cartoons to have sex.

Speaking of which, the art was pretty decent for a hentai production. I’ve seen FAR worse. Unfortunately, it was pixellated. One interesting bit they took from the game ancestry, is that you rarely see Teppei, full on, and even when you do, his eyes are shadowed by his hair. This, of course, is an old trick of hentai games to allow the player to mentally substitute himself for the protagonist. Heh, maybe that’s what I really like about the show? After all, Sylvie was my favorite.

Some pictures may be a bit NSFW, though I actually avoided the sex scenes (mostly), but to be safe, they’re under the fold and behind tags.

Linebarrels of Silliness

I’ve spent the last few days mainlining Kurroganne no Linbarrels (Linebarrels of Iron). I’d dropped it after one episode before, but I plead boredom. I have to say, the series was quite entertaining… as in it gave me plenty of material for ridicule:

I'm supposed to believe those two girls behind mack-daddy are in junior high?

  • “Your strategy of avoiding being a victim by volunteering to be a victim has… a flaw, I think.”
  • “Gonzo being Gonzo.”
  • “Just hump him already, Miu!”
  • “Wait, Emi’s stacked like that… and she’s in junior high? Come to think of it then, isn’t Miu also…. Damn!
  • Are they both daft, or do they moonlight as strippers? Never mind, here’s a twenty for each of you!”
  • “You know, after the second girl comes in and starts to strip, maybe you should lock the door… unless you’re feeling really ambitious, that is.”
  • “Linebarrels of Face Heel Turn.”
  • “Hm. ‘Fuel Depot, no open flame allowed.’ Hey, this looks like a great place to cook these fish I plucked out of thin air!”
  • “Ok, it was justified at first, but by now, don’t you think you’re being a bit bipolar, Emi?”
  • “Wait, is he a boy or a girl?” (Note: I wasn’t talking about the twins.)
  • “Don’t mind me, I’m just back from the dead. Not really sure what you buried, buddy. Must have been a topiary or something.”
  • “Come on, you can’t even find one pair of pants in Emi’s size on the entire base? What is this, Strike Witches?”
  • “Oh, sorry, I meant Linebarrels of Heel Face Turn.”
  • “Mr. Moritsugi, please, please, please make me your ‘cabin boy!'”
  • “Enough Defender of Justice, yada, yada, yada, already. You got the secret decoder ring already, just kick butt and take names.”
  • “Oh dear God, is this what entertainment has come to under the invasion? I know they’re just kids but…. SCRIPTWRITER! SOMEBODY GET THESE KIDS A SCRIPTWRITER!!!”
  • “Wow, I think bob-cut (female version) just set a new record for going from zero to tsundere.”
  • “I’ve never been so thankful for a hair clip in my life.”
  • “Oh sorry, I meant Linebarrels of Xanatos Gambit.”
  • “Oh my GOD! I used to have a jacket just like that back in the 70’s!! Wait, did I admit that out loud….”

Well the OP was ok, if a little screechy, but I really liked the first ED song. The CGI mecha were a little too fluid, but annoyingly, they often made the screen so dark or focused so tightly, it was difficult to tell what was happening. Oh well, it was Gonzo, I wasn’t exactly expecting Shakespeare.

August’s Back!

Ah, the wonders of upgrading. I finally got off my butt and updated from WordPress 2.6 to 3.0.1. One of the most annoying things about 2.6 is that it broke the customization of my header. I could change colors, but not the picture, which required me to upload the picture and manually edit the theme to point to it. Somewhere since then, WP has added the ability to customize the header directly from the interface, which is just neat-o, if I do say so myself.

Now, I could have stuck with the old theme and gotten the header picture to work, but I also decided it was time to change to a more modern theme and cleaner look, hence my adaptation of the TwentyTen theme that ships with WP3. The old picture doesn’t work as well with the new theme, but I’ve done enough for one night; I’ll make a new header image some other day. In the meantime, hey, did I mention that August is back? Everyone’s favorite grenade-throwing loli android can’t be beat!

Oh, and I used the new template to make some sidebar changes too.

Update: and I am seriously a fan of the new picture uploader. OMG that removes most of the tedious crap! I’m actually tempted to go back and fix a lot of the pictures that the last upgrade broke!
