Just Thinking…

Steven goes on about his super share ratio at Baka BT… sheesh, give a guy a big HD and a commercial connection, and he goes berserk.

Meanwhile, I still haven’t broken 1.0 share ratio, although that’s partially because I downloaded about 1G more. (To add new bonus files. I have 11 points now. Whoopee.) No matter what, I can’t go over ~30 kb/s on the upload. I should have a limit of ten times that. (Yes, I enabled port forwarding. No difference). I get 150 kb/s down; it kills my browsing and I should have 1.5 mb/s. Is AT&T advertising bits and I’m reading bytes? Wouldn’t that be an 8x difference, not 10x? Sigh. “Pro” level DSL sucks. There’s two higher tiers, up to 4x faster, but I’m apparenlty too far from the station to get a higher grade of DSL. That doesn’t stop them from harassing me to buy U-verse. (Or is it a trick?) I refuse to go with Comcast for net access.

I remember thinking an older (high-school) classmate’s TRS-III was just the shiznit. Now I whine that I can’t upload more than 2x its memory capacity every second, and that I don’t make enough to justify adding internet browsing to my “Star Trek communicator.”

So. Ain’t technology wonderful?

I really doubt that you have 1.5 megabyte per second DSL–that’s faster than my FiOS connection (5 megabits/second). It’s the same as with hard drives: tech companies choose the unit that allows them to advertise larger numbers over the unit which is immediately useful to their customers.

Well, it isn’t your line connection speed that’s limiting the upload. Rather it is the demand, I think. Once, briefly, I had something uploading at nearly 1 Mb/s. But 30kb/s is more like normal.

The real problem I’m having with Baka BT is that I download things and, though seeding, nobody takes from my seed. So my ratio is extremely low and I’m not sure how to improve it.

  3. One thing to do is to choose perennial best sellers. My two best uploads are Macademi Wasshoi (116G total upload) and Ikki Tousen Dragon Destiny (98G) and those produce constant traffic for me. Kemeko has been good for 49G and Rosario to Vampire has been 28G. Kamen no Maid Guy has been 37G. All of those have lots and lots of seeds. But they’re really popular, so they also have lots and lots of leeches.

    Sex sells.

Andrew, I think you’re right. Which means that I’m downloading 1,500,000 bits per second; lop off 3 zeros and utorrent is telling me I’m downloading 150kb/s. Likewise, my upload capacity is 386,000 bits per second, which is why I barely top 30 kb/s. I got confused thinking about the bits-to-bytes conversion, when it’s not even relevant.

DrH.: yeah, same problem. I can only counsel patience. And make sure you don’t have the number of simultaneous uploads limited, not just the total bandwidth.

Steven, my best two are Kamen no Maid Guy (3.47Gb) and Shina Dark (838Mb, but 4+ ratio). Munto, Tenchi OVA and AMG Fighting Wings OVA are the other three over 1.0, but they were downloaded early.

  5. You should run a benchmark to find out for sure:

    http://www.speedtest.net/

In the mean time, if your download is 150 kilobytes per second, that is just shy of 1.5 million bits. 30 kilobytes per second is just a bit less than 386,000 bits per second.

    150*1024*8 = 1,228,800

    30 * 1024 * 8 = 245,760

There’s a certain amount of overhead for TCP/IP, packet headers and block checksums, and no one ever fully saturates a line, so you’re probably getting about what you’re supposed to get.

Hey, I’m above 0.8 and have 16 bonus points now. Just 584 more and I can spend them — go, me!

It’s surprising that Macademy Washoi is so popular. Oh, wait, this is the DVD version. Never mind, I get it. Actually, maybe I should get it…

  7. Dr.Heinous says:

Heh. Based on Steven saying that was his best seeded, I downloaded it and have been seeding it. I may even watch it. Heh.

Whee! I just checked BakaBT and my ratio is now 1.158. I guess leaving my machine going 24 hours a day has paid off. If I was smart I’d move uTorrent to my webserver or media machines and be able to leave the main one off…

  9. Ubu Roi says:

Mine’s been going 24/7 except for when it locks up. Which has happened a few times; it may be about time to finally wipe it and install XP. Macademy Washoi is pretty cute. I liked it, and you’ll be watching the uncensored version with 68% less bad CG coverage of the important things!

I’m going to at least SEE 1.0 before I download anything else from BakaBT.

  10. Actually, as approaches to censorship go, Macademy Wasshoi was pretty neat. The censored version used clay dolls instead of hand-drawn ecchi cells. (Those same clay dolls continue to appear in the eye catches of the censored version.)

Finally!!!! 1.0 share ratio. Good God, that took forever…..
