Arpeggio of Blue Steel

Hm. This is an anime blog, maybe I should write about anime once in a while, right? Well I’m enjoying Arpeggio of Blue Steel. I didn’t think I’d care for anthropomorphic moe WWII IJN ships, but it’s actually intriguing how they’ve handled it. There’s a lot of handwaving, but some genuinely interesting parts. It’s not Strike Witches at sea. The ships aren’t actually, well, ships, exactly. Nor is it WWII, redeux. It’s the 21st century, but after we screwed up the climate and the icecaps melted. (Either there was considerably more than 200′ of water trapped in ice, or Japan subsided. That looks like about 500′ over Yokohama.) So there’s worldwide famines and conflicts, and then the Fleet of Fog shows up. They’re automated alien weapons that land in the water and copy existing ships from our history, but with insanely higher weapons technology. For whatever reason, they copy only obsolete ships from a century before and only subs and surface combatants — no carriers. Stats are given in the OP. Yes, we’re looking at one of the mecha tropes, but sometimes the gear can be an important character — anyone remember Gargantia?.

I usually don’t do this, but I’m going to give the central concept the show is built around out first. Without doing so, it’s impossible to differentiate Arpeggio based on the setup — it sounds like Strike Witches. So, final warning, massive spoilers below the fold.

A Bit About Minecraft

In response to Brickmuppet’s inquiry (and hey, I’m not as doctrinaire as Steven, but do try to put comments on the appropriate thread), I suppose I could explain just what Minecraft is.

It’s frustration incarnate, at times. It’s also a great game for people who like to build things, because it’s a sandbox. There’s three modes in which to play it: Creative, in which there are no monsters, no hunting for resources, no worrying about food. You have as much of any item as you like, and the world is your toy. Build anything! There’s even some primitive mechanisms, powered by a substance called “redstone”.

Then there’s Survival, where there are monsters (especially at night), you have to find resources, and grow food to eat. You’ll start pretty much empty handed, and if you’re a first time player, and there are no trees around your starting point, I strongly suggest you delete the world and restart. It’s not impossible to survive the first night, but it’s not for the inexperienced. Then there’s Hardcore, which is Survival…with one life. Ever. You die, everything you’ve done goes to waste. Finally, Adventure allows for player-designed maps and limits what you can break without the proper tools.

You can play in single-player or multi-player worlds in all of those modes; obviously the most popular games are Survival Single Player (SSP) and Survival Multi-Player (SMP). The server I was trying to recruit for was a SMP for up to six people (expandable if needed) but between lack of interest and some bad changes made by the server provider (300ms to Phoenix? Really?), I closed my multiplayer server.

The graphics are fairly primitive (16 bit), but there are mods to improve that. One of the reasons it looks so odd though, is the concept of the “block”. Essentially, everything other than the player is an “item” or a “block”. By mining stone, dirt, ore, or picking up water or lava in a bucket, you can convert a block into an item in your inventory and then move it somewhere else; when you set it down, it becomes a block again.

Sigh. Guess I Missed that 51st Star….

So I’m looking at GPS systems. And I see one by Garmin….

“Detailed maps of North America -With Lifetime updates – Includes preloaded street maps for the lower 49 states, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy, and Jamaica”

I suppose, in a weird way, they could be including Hawaii, but then I have a problem with “North America.” I expect our current president to be ignorant, but a company selling geographic assistance should be a little more thorough with its reviews and editing.

He Killed Negima for This?

Ken Akamatsu is back.

It’s a sequel of sorts.

In other news, Crunchyroll has manga. (I had to use the Mangafox link though; CR wants more money to read their limited manga. I’ll think about it.)

Minecraft, Anyone?

Any interest in my remaining readers (either of them, heh) in joining a small MC survival multiplayer server? Already existing, or new. Currently 1.6.2, mods as described here, but it looks like one of them accidentally deleted horses (I’ve seen none). Player damage is on, but deliberate PvP is not desired and bannable. (If you and a friend want to duel, that’s ok, but no ganking).

The DL packages are a little out of date, so don’t jump the gun. I’m just looking for interest — at this point the server in question is terribly empty (it’s me, I, and myself; Dr. H hasn’t played much, and Master Plan is on another server), but I don’t want to join some server with 1,000 players getting in the way. 10-15 would be great; even 5 would be nice.

Alternate ideas are to restart it as a 1.6.4 server with a new world, but remove some of the mods to make the game more challenging, or restart as a 1.7.2 server. I don’t like that so much because the new code to rationalize adjacent zone climate changes can result in a huge area of sameness.

Map of a part of the current world. .

If I don’t get any interest, I’m probably going to shut this server down at the end of the month, and stick to SSP.

Life, the Universe, and my Health

What’s this? Another post in the same week? Crazy, dude. Next thing you know, I’ll be talking about animé, again.

No major changes to my health, but a big minor one: my voice is starting to come back. According to the specialist (ENT), the right vocal cord is still not working; however, it’s changed position to be closer to the left one. This means I have a nearly normal voice (some hoarseness), albeit with less power and range than I used to have. Also, it stays a little sore (mostly on the right), and pushing it a bit makes things worse, of course. But it’s still far, far better than it was, even if I can’t talk normally (or at length).
