Changed My Mind…

It’s amazing what one episode can do.

In a single episode, Shakugan no Shana II has managed to undo nearly all the good will it’s generated in my mind by building up the tension, drama, and yes, even the angst. You see, for characters to remain sympathetic to the viewer, they have to be believable. Some leeway is permissible, in that shows are rarely about “average” people in “average” situations (slice-of-life often being the exception). Sometimes they’re about heroes, sometimes they’re about goats, sometimes they’re about people who are normal except for that one little superpower/affinity/ability/thing that sets them apart.

But even then, the character has to be believable, or the show is just not any good. Yuuiji’s inability to let Yoshida down nicely has been stretching belief for some time now. In Episode 4 of SnS, he stepped over the line into unreality, thanks to the addition of Konoe/Hecate.

I’ve given Yuuiji every possible break.
“He’s waiting on Shana to admit she likes him.”
“He’s just not able to say no to a pretty face.”
“He’s genuinely conflicted, because of how supportive Yoshida was when she found out he’s dead.”

I said all those things.

I was an idiot.

Starting in ep. 3, Konoe’s odd attachment to Yuuiji became evident. Throughout ep. 4, his obvious empathy for the shy, withdrawn girl has gone into overdrive. Whether it’s trading lunches, escorting her to and from school, or searching for her when she wanders off, his actions seem designed to piss off Shana and even Yoshida. And then he wonders why they’re both angry with him? Excuse me? If Japanese men were all this clueless about women, the race would have died off thousands of years ago.

Then there’s the whole Hecate/Konoe issue, about which everyone (but especially him) seems to have gone brain-dead. No one has as much as asked her a question about her odd background, where she’s from, why she’s so clueless about everyday life, where she lives (other than it’s in the same direction as Yuuiji), who her parents are, etc. Now as it happens, I have a theory about who she is (see spoiler below), but you’d think the alarm bells would start ringing again when Konoe displays unusual abilities. Things like being able to understand and talk to wild birds, and having them come and land in her hand — and extend that power to others, since one came and landed on Yuuiji while they were standing so close. And that’s another thing, what the hell was Yuuiji doing? She actually does remind him of Hecate for a moment, and his reaction was to “get in her personal space,” so close to her, I thought they were about to kiss. Of course Yoshida just happens to show up and see them right then.

Please, give me a break.

Konoe Spoiler: I think she’s Peles, the creator of the Reiji Maigo, in disguise. We see a green-haired woman in the OP who appears affectionate towards Yuuiji, and I’m assuming that’s her adult form. From the Wiki, we know she shows up at some point, as a quasi-ally. The writers tossed the Blue Insignia and Sydonay’s mission out as red herrings, although both will play parts later, I’m sure.

I can only see three possibilities here. One is that Konoe is using some sort of magic on Yuuiji that nobody can detect, not even Yuuiji, despite Alastor and Shana saying how great his senses are. The other is that his senses are assuring him that she’s benign, and he unconsciously trusts that “feel” over common sense. In that case, he’s still an idiot where the other two girls are concerned. Come on, even at nine years old, I may have been stupid and weak enough to let an older sister of a girl I liked jerk me around, but I DID understand that I’d screwed up and that there was significant jealousy going on there. (Although, come to think of it, I didn’t display any more sense in later in high school….)

But Yuuiji seems to be totally clueless — he really wonders why Yoshida and Shana are angry to the point that neither will eat lunch with him (leaving him to Konoe) and Shana is now sending Wilhelmina to train him.

Dude, that’s denser than neutronium. And I don’t buy it — so the third possibility, the one I believe, is that the writers are seriously screwing up.

Edit: and I’m off to Jason’s to see if something else is worth it. This season is turning into crap, fast.

Mayu (and Reika) FTW

Ok, it’s a bit late to the party, but the new ED for Goshusho-sama Ninomiya-kun is made of win and awesome. See for yourself.

It’s almost a shame they have to put an episode before this thing. And thanks to YouTube, we don’t!

Semi-Out of Circulation

Working a lot this week, slow posting

Noted a link to this over at Steven’s. I really didn’t need to see that in the same week that I discovered the Stainless Steel Brat’s plan to graduate from high school in 3 years is going awry — because her dad’s sending her to Japan next summer.

Great, just as soon as they get these antimatter death rays working, she will be in Japan to learn how to build super battle mechas from the masters. I am so not going to sleep better knowing this…

(Semi-random note to Baseball68: I think you might be the one right about Rental Magica, not me. Can’t quite put my finger on why it bugs me, but it’s just not developing. Episode 3 made me want to wiggle my fingers and go “Oooohh, mys-teeer-ious!” what with the guy from the association showing up, and Addie just appearing. And I hate reading all the fansubbers’ notes.)

I’ve Been Dissed

Well, crap.

I don’t hate WOW at all. I’m deadly serious about it being a honeyed trap for people who’d otherwise be competing with me for gigs and creative work. Like folks who get home, drop in front of the tv and zone out till the lights go dim, they’re opting out of life and making room for people who would rather do than consume.

Oh well, at least he got the P.T. Barnum quote wrong. The one sneer that bothers me is:

I grew up in the middle of the country. I know the basics of toilet repair and how corn cross-pollinate. (I did not, however, know Jack Kennedy…) It’s marvelous information, but not nearly as useful as knowing how to install a router.

Right, dude. Next time your toilet stops up, I’m sure that router’s going to be a lot of help.

Winners and Losers, Fall 2007 (Updated)

Well, now that we’re two episodes into the season, I’m getting a feel for the series that I said I might follow this fall. My original plan had been to follow only two series this season. One reason was because I was getting obligated on too many series, and the other was that I was actually finding myself disappointed that there wasn’t much “new” coming out to buy and watch — if I was interested, I’d seen it already. (Black Lagoon being one of the few exceptions.) So I have been buying animé just because it was “new,” only to have it sit on the shelf because I wasn’t really interested in it. This is known in many countries as “a waste of money” or “government spending.”

But the best laid plans o mice an men gang aft agley….

Leave Bad Enough Alone

Oh, great. My local newspaper has finally realized that George Lucas is working on milking the rubes for another Star Wars TV series.

LOS ANGELES — The Force may soon be coming to a television near you. George Lucas is planning a live-action television series spinoff of the Star Wars film franchise.

Godddamn, George, just let it die. You’ve already done enough to destroy the fond memories of my youth, when you made GOOD movies….a delusion that ended abruptly in the middle of Episode VI.

Lucas, 63, already has another television series in the works. Lucasfilm Animation has been working for months on the computer-animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Wait, he’s got two coming? Crap, there’s a reason I watch mindless animé. Some of it’s as stupid as anything Hollywood puts out, but at least it’s got panties, and girls that don’t look like they could substitute for beanpoles.

Once More, Mayu

Ok, in a comment that got away from me rather badly, I kicked around one of the things that was bugging me about GSNK (I refuse to type that entire title… has anyone come up with a shorter one?). Unfortunately, after saying it wasn’t the major thing that bothered me, I spent a lot of time harping on the plot. To wit:

…Reika’s introduction isn’t a plot twist, it’s a plot necessity. She’s got to be there to perform her stated task of “keeping anything immoral from happening.”

If Reika weren’t there, the story might have about four episodes to it. One of two things would happen:

  • Eventually Shungo would crack before Mayu gets control of her powers. In that case, either he dies, or it turns out he’s really immune.
  • Eventually Mayu gets full control of her powers, at least around Shungo. In that case, she either decides “why knock a known quantity?” (He’s already defended her several times) and deliberately targets Shungo for seduction, or she moves on to go do whatever succubi do.

Both scenarios ignore the “childhood friends” question, because that could potentially be a byplay or a complete second story arc, as could the “what are Shungo and Ryoko?” question.

Reika exists to keep the primaries apart, because a jealous competitor is so much better as a chaperone than a sister with a camera. Reika will be the agitator that actively keeps anything from being resolved. I expect 1-2 more episodes introducing people we see in the OP (Ep. 3 looks like the other girls in the school), and then it’s going to settle into a rut. (Argh!) Just another fanservice-fest (sans panties) with absurd sexual situations. Attractive as Mayu may be, I don’t find that overly interesting.

Now that’s true as far as it goes, but I had to stop at one line hinting what I do find interesting. To be blunt: I’m looking for another Hanayuko Maid Team La Verite. What made that show work wasn’t just the story arc over the last few episodes, but the characters themselves. Taro was only briefly overwhelmed by “inheriting” the huge fortune from his grandfather, and got his feet back under him quickly. A very centered person, he may not have known what he wanted to be, but he knew “rich pervert kid” wasn’t it. The secondary characters were also interesting and complex, and sometimes even contradictory. As a result, when the final story arc began, we understood them, we felt for them, and we understood why they supported Taro at great risk to themselves.

I don’t get that vibe from GSNK. At all. So far, there’s no hint that Ryoko and Mikihiru are operating to any sort of plan in how they torture Shungo with Mayu. I could forgive that, and just assume that there is a plan to be revealed, but for one thing: the writers can’t keep from violating their characters’ consistency. Mayu goes from cute and clumsy to cute and clumsy airhead on a dime. For no reason other than it was funny, she spaces out and starts unintentionally insulting Reika. She’s afraid of men, but she cuddles up to Shungo in his sleep. She knows she’s a succubus and needs to control her ability to attract men, but she practically dry-humps Shungo in gratitude for rescuing her. Then she turns all shy and timid again. I could roll with one or two things, but as I said before, she’s being used as a blank wall, and the writers are hanging whatever they want on her for the comedy effect.

Shungo is at least halfway believable as the guy in the middle of the hormone storm, but what’s with Reika? She gets the same treatment; going from tsuntsun to deredere and back in a flash. She just isn’t going to cut it as “rich heiress,” because getting violent isn’t a solution in the boardroom. (I said BOARD room, not BED room! Get yer mind outta the gutter.) The way Ryoko and Mikihiru pull very transparent con jobs and blackmail her is just absurd. The idiot had better find a smart husband, or she’ll get swindled out of the family fortune about five minutes after inheriting it. (Where’s Kuriko Kazetsubaki when you need her, to teach some lessons?)

He is My Master is another series that was better than I expected, based on the strength of the character I least expected to be in control, Mitsuki. And that’s my real problem with this series so far: weak characterization. I hope the writers get a grip, but so far, I’ve not seen any indication of it.

And that’s enough about Mayu and company… Renta Magica #2 is done and I want to see if it is going to be the sleeper hit or not. Later!
