More Mayu Silliness

I went back and dug out Steven’s scoring system for corny comedies, and applied it to GSNK:

(2) – 2 or more people seriously contending for the affections of one (1 point for each serious contender)
(1) – …who trickle in (1)
(1) – …who aren’t human (1 for each)
(1)* – …who have special powers (1 for each)
(1) – Dorky hero (1) (Yes, he’s a dork, if he’s not all over Mayu, fatal or not!)
(0) – …who has a unique power (1) (Pending.)
(1) – Klutzy heroine (1)
(1) – …who has a unique power (1) (She’s a succubus.)
(0) – Love expressed as violence (1) (Pending. Probably yes for Reika.)
(1) – Obvious choice (1) (Yes, both of them! Really, Mayu, but I suspect both.)
(1) – Women with exaggerated figures (1)
(1) – Jiggle (1)
(0) – Panty flashes (1) (Surprisingly, not a one.)
(1) – Ecchi (1)
(1) – Joshikousei (1) (Of course.)
(1) – Meido-san (1)
(1) – Accidental exposure (1) (And some on purpose too–by the schoolgirls.)
(1) – Accidental groping (1) (Ditto the above.)
(0) – Swimsuits at the beach (1) (Pool. Good enough.)
(0) – Bathing and yukatas in a bathhouse (1) (Not yet.)
(0) – Kimonos at a summer festival or cultural festival (1) (Not yet.)
(0) – Girl’s locker room (1) (Not yet.)
(1) – Cosplay (1) (Yowza.)
(0) – Romances among secondary characters (1) (Not yet.)
(1) – Meganekko (1) (Based on the OP, yes.)
(1) – Annoying relatives (1) (Big sis, big time.)
(1) – Meddlers (friends or family) (1) (Two of them.)
(0) – No romantic resolution at the end (1) (Pending, but I bet not.)

*Should “Filthy Rich” be treated as a special power? I’m inclined to think so. One additional point if you agree.

Score: 20. And that’s in just the first two episodes….

I just had an odd thought. I’ve mentioned that we see Shungo and Mayu kiss in the OP. What if that’s actually child Reika? The flashbacks are definitely Mayu, but is the locket in one scene a hint?

Could the writers be doing a bit of misdirection? Or am I making a serious mistake, trying to apply brainpower to this show?

Seriously Derailed by Mayu

At least, with Mayu’s appearance, there’s no need to feel guilty. I mean, she’s supposed to be incredibly hot. But dammit, this is just going too far!

Probably NSFW.

I said she was cute and clumsy, didn’t I? She did that to herself… (No, it wasn’t believable.)

Hero, or Zero?

Steel. I’m telling ya, the guy’s made out of steel to not be all over that.

Edit: FYI, just waiting on the 2nd episode of Renta Magica before I call winners and losers thus far.

Second edit: I was going to put this in a reply, but it’s too important to the show. Spoiler: As of the second episode, Ryoko becomes the school nurse, so she can keep an eye on them at school. Reiko claims to be taking the maid position to watch them at home, though she’s really tsundere for him. The thing that bothers me is that Mayu isn’t being consistent. Sometimes she’s all over him, other times she’s embarrassed to be around him, and other times she’ll do things that make no sense, such as when she antagonized Reika. The writers are treating her like a blank wall they can hang whatever behavior on, depending on whether they want comedy, sex, or both. If anything ruins the show for me, it’s going to be that.

I Am Not Alone

It would seem that I’m not the only one who wanted to see more of Wong in Gundam 00.

Good or bad thing that I’ve found more Wong fanservice in the past 24 hours than I have of Darry in the past 24 days?

I say “good”…. Darry’s still a case of “fifteen will get you twenty” by the end of the show.

Wong is all woman.

Yowza. I’ll get back to you when my brain starts working again…

Um, ok. Edit: Yes, as a matter of fact, she does make me think of Melin, all grown up. Shaoran Li, you damn fool.

Pity that Mayu has got the same problem as Darry ….but with the shape of Wong, because she really derails me.

Yeah, while that’s cookin’ up some hot lovin’, the eyecatch doesn’t do her credit. This is a bit more like it, below the fold: (NSFW)

Still Beats Right Stuff

Oddly, although I turned my order in to RACS on the 7th, I was notified only yesterday (10th) that the order had shipped. Usually, Robert’s on for the next day, but then this is the super-saver free shipping. So I should quit whining. They might have had to wait on something to arrive from the manufacturer.

Update: And it got in today, which matches the time I expected it to start with, despite the odd lateness of the shipping. So I really have nothing to complain about!

Another Pair of Snap Reviews

It’s late so I’m only going to give these a sentence or two apiece for now

Renta Magica: this one might be the sleeper hit. A lot of very common tropes and ideas all mixed in here, but it seems to be coming out better than the sum of its parts. Like the art direction in the first episode; good use of light and shadow. Surprisingly (or not), several of the girls are in high-school, and appear hung up on the main character — whom they abuse, of course, as useless. Until he takes off his eye patch and kicks ass, also of course. I’m getting distinct harem vibes here, with at least 3, maybe 5 girls involved (one loli, of course.) (edit: I finally figured out what the last few scenes reminded me of: Maburaho.)

Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun: Totally over-the-top sex farce set in a high-school. Folks, the big sister doesn’t just make her brother live with a succubus, she makes them sleep in the same bed! (Oh, and don’t kiss her, you might die.) Why does the succubus run around in what looks like a nightgown? Who knows? Why was she dropped off at school from a military helicopter? Who cares? Where do succubi come from? Who is asking these stupid questions? Shut up and drool. Pander-riffic fantasy wish-fulfillment that doesn’t care how absurdly wrong or impossible it’s situations are. At least there’s no lolis.

Those Practical Japanese

I don’t know whether to be afraid of the Japanese, or laugh, or just go, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”

More Snap Reviews

Watched the new Gundam 00, and the first episode of Shana II. Provisional thumbs up on Shana II, forget Gundam 00.

Shana: It’s a bit late to write up details, but, although I’m a bit peeved at Shana for the twist to keep the teen angst going, it’s obvious that the gang is about to be in it up to their necks, and nobody realizes it. It looks like the Ball Masque has put some kind of enchantment on Yuiiji, and it’s sneaky enough that none of them have realized it yet. The animation looks to be upgraded from the first season, but this is a first episode, so lets not praise it too much, yet.

Gundam had some good animation and nice character designs, but started losing me when the AEU’s crack pilot spent too much time bragging — while getting his butt kicked. Um, look dude, if someone crashes your party like that, it’s fairly certain that they have your number. More caution is advised, as opposed to bragging. They totally lost me when the “terrorist tape” rolled. WTF? The Gundams are being run by a private army called Celestial Being that has decided to attack both alliances in order to end war? Who do these guys think they are, Mithril? No, that’s insulting FMP — Mithril had no such delusions. Even some of the characters in the show think it’s stupid — which may indicate it’s just a propaganda ploy, and the real motivation is something else. I don’t know, I don’t care. But I did like that Chinese woman with the pigtails.

UPDATE: In the comments here, poster Big D nails it:

In most Gundams . . . there is generally a nominal “good” and “bad” side. The heroes are introduced as working for the cause of the “good” side, if not always directly for it. However, as the series progresses, the line between the sides blurs, and the “good” leaders are shown to be stupid and selfish. The heroes then begin fighting for “themselves”, or “their buddies”, or “because that’s what soldiers do”, with no mention of strategic goals or an end state besides a cease fire. Psychobabble gets tossed around about a soldier’s fate, and why wars are horrible, but we have to have them so that soldiers have something to do, or somesuch. The series then wraps up with some big doomsday weapon, while distracting the viewer from the bigger picture with personal/romantic plots with the heroes.

Thank you, BigD, for putting into words exactly what bugs me most about the so-called plots.
