Fall Season, 2007

Well, Steven just posted a link to someone who was crazy enough to run down all 42 new animés for this fall. It looks like things might be picking up from what’s been a lackluster spring and summer. Nothing’s really captured my imagination since Code Geass.

Lucky Star was a disappointment; cute, but I like a plot, not just slice-of-life. Although everyone’s ranting about Gurren Lagen over at Jason’s place, I just couldn’t take any more bombastic, over-the-top silly screaming mecha attacks, and finally grossed out around ep. 5, when the hamster ripped his own ass off and fed it to Simon and Kamina.

Romeo x Juliet wasn’t bad, but I finally gave up on the teen idiocy combined with Zorro-like stunts. In the end, I just couldn’t buy a girl who breaks into (and out of!) a secure prison to rescue a friend, yet faints when told that she’s that last heir of the old ruling house. Wuss. Crusader for justice one minute, weepy teen the next. Romeo was equally unbelievable as the heir apparent. The kind of father he had, the old man would have bumped him off long since and replaced him with someone a bit… oh, more able to recognize girls in disguise. Get glasses, boy. Or develop a sense of smell as good as your pegasus’.

A more positive (yet despairing!) note has been the bizarre Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei –assuming it doesn’t squander its early promise. Now that someone else has picked up fansubbing it, I will find out for certain. Ep. 6 was quite sub-par.

As for the promise of the new season, well, I’m not going to waste time repeating Hashihime’s rundown here, but after looking through it, I’ve picked out the ones I’m likely to follow next month. Or not follow, as the case may be. One of the things I realized as I reviewed this list, is that there’s one or two grim, negative shows in it. Not Gantz-level, nothing that’s a real downer, but the list has a much heavier component of dramas than my recent viewing habits would lead one to expect.

Now, I’m not nuts about grim shows, but “negative energy” shows don’t automatically turn me off. If it’s negative for the sake of being negative, that’s one thing, and I don’t like it. (Got my fill of dystopic futures from 1970’s era science fiction. Go to hell, Ben Bova.) But “grim and gritty” can often mean good drama, with high-stakes conflict. In fact, I don’t happen to find the-whole-universe-is-at-stake stories to be particularly believable if they’re not grim and gritty. The cost paid by characters to stave off the end of the world (if they can) may be tragic, it may be farcical, but it’s not good comedy, and I doubt it’s moé. (Well, ok, unless Haruhi Suzumiya is involved. The exception that proves the rule.) And good comedy is harder to do than good drama. For good drama you need sympathetic characters, credible enemies, and adequate storytelling. Comedy is more difficult, and too many times, writers don’t seem to be able to do it without dipping into the well of “old and worn out gags.” For instance, my heuristic for any comedy movie: painful crotch shot to a guy. If it’s in the preview, the writers just didn’t have anything funny, so they recycled all the same old crap. Let the twenty-somethings go watch it; they haven’t seen it 47 times, like I have.

Ahem. I digress. Again.

Shana II and Clannad. These two are givens.

Shana, because I ended up giving the original series a positive score. I’m worried that the angst and teen stupidity may overwhelm it again, as it did during some phases of the first series, but I’m more than willing to give it a shot. It’s capable of being a very grim series, or a very annoying series. We’ll see.

Clannad, because I’m still willing to check a show out strictly because KyoAni is doing it. As Lucky Star proved, that doesn’t mean anything besides a nice OP, but the character design looks very “Kanon-ish” and the story sounds fairly, well, strange and grim.

Moving along to the probable (singular):

Dragonnaut: The Resonance has, on the surface, a silly concept. Flying armored dragons, in spaaaaaaaaaaaace! But it’s got a lot of Kyo-Ani veterans, including Tomokazu Sugita, and Gonzo is doing the animation, so it’s going to have some “wow!” scenes, for sure.

After that, it’s a bit more speculative. A few series look like they might be worth it; I’ll give them a couple of episodes to catch my attention. (Of course, this all assumes someone subs them, as I don’t speak Eleven.)

Rental Magica is a novel & manga-to-animé adaptation. I’ve had good luck with series that have novels as their source material lately, Zero notwithstanding. This one looks like it’s going to have one hell of a cast, but I’m seriously concerned about the director: Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuko wo is not a positive reference in my book. To be fair, I don’t think my issues were with the directing; more the writing and character design, so I’ll give this one a shot. It’s got potential to go a lot of places in a lot of styles, given that it’s about an agency (run by a boy) that rents magicians out.

Night Wizard is an RPG adaptation, which usually isn’t a good sign. Still, it sounds intriguing enough to look it over, and I like what I’ve seen of the character designs.

Highly speculative: Maybe only one episode… maybe. Couple of ecchi shows here

Prisim Ark, which apparently has a very good reputation for visuals. Whether or not the show lives up to that, I like the premise because it doesn’t involve a loser kid in jr. high or high-school. More flying dragons, in an alternate medieval world. “Got Lizard?” Eh, my mind is going to some seriously Freudian places from the preponderance of dragons & girls in animé this year. (Ok, two series don’t make a preponderance. So what? They’re bleeping dragons!)

Goshusho-sama Ninomiya-kun needs a much better name, and looks like it will be stupid ecchi fluff. The description oozes “bad” all over my monitor: “The hero is forced by his sexy elder sister to live with a beautiful girl, Mayu, in order to cure her fear of boys: sleep together, bathe together, etc. Then the beautiful tsuntsun student council president enters the household…as a maid.” How much of a hero can he be, if his older sister has to FORCE him to co-habitate with a beautiful girl? “Nebbish without a clue” does not a protagonist make. If the late broadcast time means extreme fanservice, it might be another Amaenaideyo, which had some delicious girls and excellent fanservice, but poor animation, and poorer writing.

Majin Tante is probably not going to interest me, but something about the warped concept keeps tickling my interest. I may wait and see what others say first.

Ghost Hound is being hyped based on the pedigree of its writers. Although I strongly prefer good writing over bad, I worry when I see that as the “big draw” for a series, because it usually means (in Hollywood, at least) that it blows chunks. Hey, even Mozart had off-days. On the other hand, its also got an off-beat concept at its core.

Monty-Python’s-Knights-of-the-Round-Table series (“Run away! Run away!): All the kids shows. Because, well, I’m not a kid. (Duh.) All shows that sound like their they’re (grr) targeted at kids, in order to make them into nice mush-brained liberal Democrats. (Mokke, I’m looking at you.) Anything labeled seinen or slice-of-life. Miname-ke looks to be a dual offender, and then gets the kiss of death: staff/studio pedigree is scarred by Crescent Love.

Now if KyoAni would just confirm that they’re doing Melancholy 2, then I could be excited about the Winter (or spring?) season for sure.

This is Why All Night Cyber Cafes are Bad for You

Man dies after playing online games for three straight days.

I’m rather glad the game wasn’t identified, because, frankly, it’s irrelevant. The press would love to spin it as the game’s fault, just to sell a few extra ads, but that’s stupid and misleading. Ya know, I suspect if he was that fucked up, I suspect he had health problems other than anything that might be caused by gaming too much. The kind of person who never leaves the computer probably has not taken good care of himself.

There’s a supposed cyber-cafe near me. Actually it’s a run-down dump of a shop run by a geek and his son; there’s no food and the rentable comps are some dusty old systems they couldn’t sell that are stuck in a corner with high stools to sit on. I made the mistake of setting foot in there once to see if they had some old laptops for sale, and gracefully extracted myself as fast as possible. A clean shop and polite staff doesn’t mean they know jack, but a cluttered dump with bare concrete floors, poor lighting, parts tossed everywhere, and an un-knowledgeable clerk (the son) who has no clue about the prices of anything on sale there doesn’t inspire confidence either.

I Stepped in Some Shingu Once…

So I’m up at the Heinous Doctor’s place in Dallas this weekend. We’re watching Shingu, which he’s finding quite enjoyable. One thing I’m doing just to be mean, is pestering him after each disk:

“Nayuta, or Setsuna?” Of course, this early (we’re only at the end of #2), that’s not a fair question, Setsuna isn’t doing much yet. That will change…

Not much else to tell; I’ll be back in town late Sunday and will have more to say then.

Banner of the Stars III — Screencaps

Well, unfortunately, these aren’t up to my normal standards. Owing to some computer problems I had several months ago, I’m back on an old, old version of a player for the moment, and it’s screencap functionality could be described as “amazing suckage.” The pics only come out in about 640 width… taken from a 1440 by 900 monitor.

Whoa. That’s suckage.

Oh well, I’ll get off my lazy ass and go do something about it right after I do all the other things on my “deferred until Haruhi Suzumiya acts like a normal girl” list.

Oh, yeah, you’re reading this post for the pics, aren’t you? Well get below the fold!

Banner of The Stars III (updated)

Talking about the Abh over at Chizumatic again recently gave me the impetus to haul out Banner I and load a DVD at random. Turned out to be the episode where Jinto and Lafiel are invited to dinner with their commander…to celebrate the birthday of that commander’s brother, whom Lafiel killed in the prior series. Some priceless moments there, needless to say. But seeing that made me do two things:

First, yank the disc out and put in Crest, specifically the DVD containing the dinner between Baron Febdesh and Lafiel (now THAT is a dinner with priceless moments! Lafiel’s smile….brrrrrrr!)

Second, I hunted down Banner III and started BT’ing it. Banner III was released as an OAV in 2005, and there doesn’t appear to be any hurry to release it here in R1. If they ever do, I’ll be happy to buy a copy, but in the meantime, It’s high time I got to see more of Jinto and Lafiel.

Looks like it’s going to take quite a while, given the few torrents currently underway.

Edit: Downloaded overnight. Also, I realized part needed to be in the spoiler above. Unfortunately, I’m having problems with the DVD players in both computers right now, so a screencap isn’t in the cards, or I’d post one of Lafiel at the end of the dinner with Febdesh. Their drinks should have frozen over, that was so icy.

Update: I started a response to Steven’s message, but it quickly grew too much to be a mere reply, so here it is…. sans spoilers, for the most part.

The new class looks sort of like a smaller Gosroth; it’s mentioned that the new ships don’t have the mines, which makes them a lot more maneuverable. (In fact, it’s remarked at one point that being down the weight of the shuttle will give one an even bigger advantage. It seemed … odd, and I wonder if it wasn’t Abh humor at work.) The ships do seem to have the same before-and-aft railgun arrangement though. The fansubbers translated their class as “assault frigate” and I think that’s about right. They’re meant to operate in groups of 6 like the patrol craft.

The artwork was much cleaner and sharper in Banner III, as it’s fully digital-cell (or whatever the terminology is). Although I really like the new look, this was a bit off-putting with Lafiel in particular, as they seemed to have the most trouble keeping her on-form, and it gave me a bit of trouble with some other characters. The show jumps back and forth in time much like the first couple of episodes of Crest, which is also somewhat confusing. I think I followed most of it, but one part (see below) still doesn’t make sense to me. I found that I should have watched Banner I again before watching III, as I had difficulty remembering some of the minor characters, which was exacerbated by the change in the art.

As for the synopsis, I think I read the same one, but if so, it was badly flawed. Whomever wrote it missed a lot of the subtleties of the interplay between various parties. For one thing, the “battle” when the first group arrived at Martine bore only a superficial resemblance to the one described. The events were there, but the facts were different. (Something to remember when you watch the news, these days.) The strength of Crest/Banner is in how the characters all express themselves, especially the Abh; not everyone says what they’re thinking. So what really happened, as opposed to what everyone said happened were two different things. The meeting between Til and Jinto was also nothing like what was described. The events were there, but the feel was entirely different. It may be that the synopsis was influenced by the novels, and the animé is the one not being faithful, but I don’t think so — it would be highly out of character, given how much of the author’s flavor has made it through in the first 3 series.

Overall, I would say that anyone who is waiting for this series to be licensed in R1 is in for a long wait. It might be, just to complete the story, but this part of it suffers from not having any space battles, like Crest, or Banner I and II. The combat with Martine is described in retrospect (another time jump), which was a mistake, I think, as it destroyed any tension. To compensate, it appears to be trying to hard to “gin up” a mock battle between two groups of the new assault frigates Ekuryua gets a few minutes alone with Jinto in a part of that battle which makes no sense to me (going to re-watch later, I think I missed a key point), but her reaction to show

was intriguing. She is obviously still carrying a torch for Jinto–but it’s not in her style to do anything about it, let alone speak of it. I’ve always thought that she was a little too tightly wound, and Ekuryua confirmed it here. Spoiler warning!! show

Well, anyway, it’s not just obvious, but it’s pretty much in the open that Jinto is going to be Lafiel’s consort, as there is a discussion of what their children will be like–although it’s not exactly between Jinto and Lafiel. Still, I want to be a fly on the wall when they discuss show

Disappointingly, it strongly hints at the end that there are no plans to make a Banner IV, as the closing credits include a “what they did afterwards” montage.

Nothing Much Ado

Well, I’m not going to get into the details, but the really, really bad news I got a month ago has turned out to be only mostly really bad, so I can be thankful for that much, at least. Best summarized by good ol’ MP: “Not quite dead yet!” (The situation, involving doctors, Medicare, feelings, and mistakes, is almost as ludicrous as one of their skits).

In the meantime I’ve played entirely too much WOW, watched entirely too little animé, and gone crazy at work. Pity my boss — I can’t complain because she’s had it even worse. Which means she’s been out of the office for almost all of August, and guess who most stuff landed on? Yeah, officially, other people were in charge to free me up for crunch-time on a major roll-out (and they handled a fair piece of it), but I ended up handling a lot of both jobs.

I haven’t watched any new animé beyond the 5th episode of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, plus a couple more episodes of Hayate no Gokou (Why did I drop it? It’s hilarious! Maybe I was in a bad mood that month, or had the wrong expectations…) And I finally hauled out Planetes and watched one more disk. The worst of what annoyed me about the first DVD seems to be over, but there’s still a lot of stuff I cringe: the too-eager rookie, the incompetent manager, the cynical and bitter old-timer, the social stratification… and the overall plot still hasn’t shown up. It wasn’t so annoying this time, but neither did it knock my socks off. I have to give it props for the OP though… it’s everything that Shingu’s wasn’t. Relevant, artistic, representative of the series (in a way) and the music doesn’t make your ears bleed. If anyone can recommend a freeware program that can extract/convert it, I might pull it off the DVD (assuming it’s not copy-protected) and YouTube it just for kicks.

Oh, never mind, someone already has

Of course, if you want an OP that’s different, now this is the OP to watch. (Man, SZS is so not making it to Cartoon Network. They’d have to come up with something beyond Adult SwimGeezer Walk, maybe?)

As for finding the Planetes OP online already… man, the internet is such an ambition killer. Every time I think of something cool to do, someone’s already gone and done it!

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot. Season opens for the Saints tonight, and most folks are predicting them and the Bears in the championship game. Sooooooooo….. We on again, Duck-boy?

Update: Ouch. That was brutal. Looks like I was right… last time. (Can’t find the link now, but I said the Saints would have one good year and then the party atmosphere would get them. Always does.)

Words To Live By

Spotted in the comments over at Jason’s place:

If you’re going to try to be dramatic, be dramatic. If you’re going to try to be a gag series, be a gag series. Trying to combine the two makes baby Jebus cry. And can result in cases of Mai Otome.)

Question: Does it also result in cases of Grenadier?

Edit: It definitely resulted in cases of Negima?!
