Order In 12/07

Yeah, it’s a boring and ordinary title. So I wasn’t feeling too inventive tonight, so what?

  • The Third:The Girl With the Blue Eye, Vol #3. Obligation buy, but I definitely don’t mind.
  • Witchblade,Vol #2. I had stopped watching this series just as it was getting interesting, I think.
  • Simoun , Vol #1 Obligation buy, but can you blame me?
  • Black Lagoon Complete Collection Bundle. Looks like good clean violent fun.
  • Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Vol #4 Limited Edition. Completes the series.

Gurren Lagen isn’t out yet, so no joy there…

Churchill as Kamina? Kamina as Churchill?

It seems that the secessionist sentiment* in parts of the UK (probably a backlash against the EU, but let’s not go there) resulted in the Telegraph taking open submissions for a new flag design. After that, they took the “top designs” and ran an online poll. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize what they were letting themselves in for, as animé fans managed to slip in several designs based on their favorite characters, and then conspired to flood the poll in the last few days. The British weren’t quite clueless:

Some [designs] were serious, some scurrilous, some frankly ridiculous. Many came from Japan, where our competition sparked a national craze after it was picked up by a popular online forum.

I don’t know if a bunch of otaku on 2chan should be thought of as nationwide. Crazy, yes, but nationwide? Still, the result? According to the Telegraph, this is the winner of the new flag poll, with no less than 55% of the vote:

They’re not fully clued in for other details, such as what the hell the center of the flag is.

The dragon itself was inspired by a Japanese anime television series.

Whatever. Clearly, this should be added to the list as reason #187 to never pay attention to internet polls: “May result in unintentional piercing of the heavens with your drill.”

*Update: Nationalist sentiment, actually. A Welsh MP suggested changing the Union Jack to add the Welsh dragon.

December Doldrums

Watching The Third again, this time on DVD. Bought the first two as an obligation buy; I’ll be finishing the series purchase as it comes out. Definitely worth it. I decided to post some disjointed thoughts, rather than try to work them into a coherent post.

I believe that Honoka’s comic emo distortions become less frequent as time goes on, as I don’t remember so many of them in the latter half. I was also disappointed we didn’t get more of the dirty-minded doctor and his yuri android, but we did get Sensei instead. The characters of this story are vivid — even if they’re not always what we expect. That’s more a problem with expectations though; with most of them, what you see is what you get, and what they are. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the writers did a great job of surprising me with the obvious.

While the narration annoys, the poetry never completely goes away — although the nature of several story arcs does reduce its opportunity to appear. There are a couple of long ones, but the ending kind of sneaks up, one of the things I fault the series for; the ending feels tacked on, although seemingly unrelated events have been building in that direction for some time.

Although I was disappointed by the thinness of the overall plot, and annoyed by that incessant narration, it’s a solid B. I don’t think they did as much with it as they could have, but I do recommend the series. Top-notch voice cast with veteran seiyuu, pretty good animation (the CG work is excellent), and a post-apocalypse world that is, despite being a desert, anything but grim. And Honoka makes a rather engaging main character, being far more mature than her young years, yet young in the ways of the heart.

Ron Paul’s spambot

This is one nasty spambot.

I had wondered at all the Ron Paul supporters coming out of the woodwork on blogs; I hadn’t gotten any of the e-mail spam this story mentions. Of course, the big question is “Who ordered this?” A supporter, or opponent? The fact that they were actually able to track it down makes me think “setup” but that could just be the conspiracy theorist lurking in my hindbrain.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagen

I think I made a mistake. I think I made a really big mistake.

It’s like this. Take a ridiculous robot show that pulls in just about all the clichés: shouting attacks, combining robots, “powering up”, you name it.

Overdo those clichés just enough to wink at the audience, “Yeah, we know this is silly, too.”

Add an odd style of drawing the characters, some realistic, some weird. Toss in one really flaming gay guy.

Combine it with some real drama, political, and personal conflicts.

That’s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagen. Earlier this year, I watched the first five episodes, finally tossing it aside when a scene grossed me out. It just seemed to be wandering around, screaming and being silly, so I dropped the show and slammed it on this blog. A few weeks later, the fans went berserk over unexpected developments in Episode 8. (Not even putting it in a spoiler. If you know, don’t say, or I’ll delete your comment. If you don’t know, you don’t want to have it spoiled.) The show didn’t exactly get Melancholy-level raves, but there was suddenly a lot of buzz about it, which I ignored. And I kept ignoring it. I’d read the occasional blog post about it, but couldn’t get over that one scene.

I kept wondering though, if maybe I hadn’t missed a bet. But before I got around to admitting that maybe I made a mistake, it was licensed –either before the run was finished or right after, memory fails me. So I just shrugged and moved on. Last night, I saw a renegade fansub group had just finished their copy of episode 19, and I decided “what the hell, download it and see what this episode is like. Maybe the series is worth buying.”

It is. Oh yeah, it is. That first half dozen episodes were just what it needed to set the stage, I guess; from what everyone said, it ramps up after that and starts rocking; based on what I saw tonight, I can believe it. It’s got drama, pathos, conflict, betrayal, psycho women, honor, and a very strong grasp of human nature. But what blew me away was the visuals.. I don’t know if it was an aberration, but if they’d been doing this at the beginning of the show, I’d have watched it all the way through.

(pictures below the fold, because I messed up and they’ll blow the formatting.)

Die! Die! Die, DRM!

Oh, hell yes!

Wal-Mart Joins Amazon to Push Labels to Ditch DRM Once and For All

Even if the remaining major labels who have yet to ditch DRM are dragging their feet on the road of inevitability, major online retailers don’t feel like waiting around for them to finally do the deed. Wal-Mart has reportedly made an ultimatum of some sort to major labels demanding that they start selling their catalogs in MP3 so the retail giant can add them to their upcoming MP3 store, which, coming from a retailer of that size, should get their attention.

We’re one step closer to rationalizing the market. Hundreds of producers, associate producers, assistants to the associate producers, hairstylists, therapists, and other “value added personnel” soon to be unemployed. But don’t worry, the big boys at the top will still have their golden parachutes.

Snap thoughts: Goyshusho-sama 9 and Shana II 9

Goyshusho-sama may be trying to develop a plot after all. It’s doing it in fits and starts, and I don’t know whether to believe it or not after that last head fake. Moreover, I don’t know if I should consider believing it… we’ve already developed two women with odd characteristics (one a succubus, the other has MPD), and then promptly forgotten both traits. Now we’re throwing in two more people with odd abilities, strong hints that another girl might be a succubus, a strange fellow with incubus-like powers that may be appearing in the flashbacks (and is also in class B) — he’s got an interest in Mayu, whose fear doesn’t trip around him.

Is it nonsense, or clues? I just cant figure out if some of the strange things we’ve seen happen are indications of super-powers, or if they’re all supposed to be covered by the SEP field. Nor can I tell if the manga-ka was lousy with his continuity, or if this is an incredibly deeply-laid set of clues meant to look like silliness and fanservice. My money is on a lousy manga-ka; the audience isn’t supposed to be as confused as I am at this point. If there are Mysteries about, it should be clear that they exist, and aren’t just confusion caused by inconsistent gags. If there are super-powers in this show, then nearly everybody at the school is unusual (at least all the major characters). Why do all the girls like to tease Shungo, even tie him up? Why do the guys not mind all the attention he gets? Why does the hotel have the master breaker switch for the entire wing in an open hallway? Wait, now we’re really getting stupid.

Shungo, upon witnessing two of his classmates desperately attempting to ascend a sheer cliff (“we have transcended human abilities!”) by jumping from one falling rock to another: “That’s bullshit.” Why were they trying to climb the cliff? To view the girls bathing, of course. Class field trip time.

Question: If Reika is so rich, why is she passing time playing crappy old video games from the early 80’s? Evaluating a “nostalgia release” for Houjou Electronics, maybe? Sigh, even the omake was relatively disappointing this time.

Then there’s Shana II. My memory was playing tricks on me about the character known as Outlaw. Yuri, is as doomed as he initially appeared to be. He plays the hero, but in the end, he buys the farm saving Marjorie.

The part that surprised me is that Yuri was not stupid or inexperienced, which is what I expected. He was brave, smart, and he did push past his limits, but that wasn’t it. No, the answer was much less clichéd and more painful. Yuri destroys Annaberg while Marjorie faces off with Sydonay. Both Marjorie and Sydonay have been badly wounded in the earlier fighting, but Marjorie worse, so Yuri goes to help. If Marjorie attacks at the same time, they may take Sydonay down, but he still might kill one of them…and she can’t die until she has her revenge on Silver Knight. She holds back until too late; Sydonay kills Yuri and escapes. Tanaka thinks Marjorie is the greatest, but Satou, having received this story in response to his request for training, understands her real message: “You do not want to follow me into battle, because if it’s a choice between you or my revenge, I will let you die.” I’m foreseeing some bad things there.

Aside: The writer surprises me at times; his teen angst stuff is total crap, but the other parts of the story are done very well. If he’d just learn to ditch the angst, these would be top-notch stories; I have to assume (due to the sheer amount of “romangst” out there) that it’s a distortion forced by pandering to the Japanese market. Would Misaki Chronicles have been more popular in Japan if it included a bunch of romance & angst? Maybe. Would it have been improved? Hell, no.

Meanwhile, Yuiiji succeeds in casting a fuzetsu for the first time….and much to Shana and Alastor’s shock, it is silver in color. Cue dramatic fanfare.

I was on the verge of saying “You know, this might not be a bad series if you just skip episodes 4, 5, 6, and 7…. then I saw the preview. Back to schoolgirl follies. Groan. On the bright side, it will have Chigusa, and there’s a hint that Yuiiji’s dad might be about to show up!
