Slow Posting Again (Updated with some CCS)

Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it before. Work’s a bitch; I’m coming home brain dead. We’re trying to do 15% more job on 40% less employees. No, automation doesn’t make up the difference; in our case it’s backfired and made things worse. That 15% is more like 30% after you factor in the botched upgrades. I think that estimate is low.

I’ve started CardCaptor Sakura; will watch the fifth disk tonight. I figure I’ll do 1-2 per day for the next week or so, and work through it. Mildly interesting — it’s ok, but preteen mahou shoujo is not really my speed. If it hadn’t been for the insanely good deal, I’d have passed on it.

Some thoughts about the show: I have been convinced since the middle of the second DVD that her family knows she’s the Cardcaptor. For one thing, there’s the entire question of how the book came to be in her father’s study. And her brother has three times mentioned or displayed abilities which might be magical: he talked about making up ghost stories to scare Sakura, except he talked as if he really could see ghosts–and Sakura can’t. He definately saw his mother’s spirit in one episode, whereas Sakura didn’t notice it looking over her shoulder. And finally, Li hit him with a fire charm, and he just brushed it off. I’m therefore of the opinion that Sakura gets her magic from her father’s side of the family–I’d wondered if, thanks to his backstory, he’s actually from the Li clan. However, the real answer hit me today (though I wonder if I read it somewhere before and am just remembering it instead): Clow has to be Sakura’s paternal grandfather. It explains why the book was in the study, and why she is such a powerful sorceror. While it would be funny if Shaoran, Tomoya and Sakura were all distant cousins/in-laws, I believe that to be the answer. No, I don’t want spoilers.

Speaking of which, I thought it odd that Tomoya and Sakura never commented on the discovery that they are second cousins.

Then there’s Yukito: he probably knows something too, if not the whole story. The first meeting between him and Li was just too strange. (aside from the yaoi vibes.). I just can’t figure out if the show is hinting that the two guys have a yaoi thing going, or if it’s just CLAMP being CLAMP, or if they’re engaging in misdirection. I’m definately getting the “everybody has a secret” vibe from this show.

I can see why the WB cut it to ribbons though. There’s some really creepy sexual undertones, what with the one girl that’s got a crush on her teacher, Sakura’s mom marrying her dad when she was 16 and *he* was her teacher, the siscon references, and the parallels between Tomoya and Sakura on the one hand, and their mothers on the other. I cannot imagine this show airing uncut in the U.S.

Could we get through ONE episode without Tomoya and her weird Sakura obsession? Also, I definately skip the Kero segments after each episode. Pointless and unfunny.

Well, this isn’t much of a series review; not one picture even. Well, I said I was brain dead. (At least it’s +5 to save vs. brain-eating zombies, since they prefer the live variety…)

Update: Hahaha! I love Melin, after just one episode!

Update 2: And now a picture! I promised Steven I’d look this up. At 20:48 on the third DVD, Shaoran throws a charm at Toya that bursts into flame. Both he and Yukito witness it, but Toya just brushes it off. It’s presented ambiguously; so that they might assume he Shaoran threw a burning piece of cardboard. I don’t think they’re that dull though, either of them.

Oh and I forgot, Clow married into the Li clan, didn’t he? So if my theory is correct, Shaoran and Melin are distant relatives of Sakura and Toya, though by marriage.

Update 3: Well that was a short-lived romance. Melin’s “I can do anything better than you” routine got old quick. I’m finding her quite annoying now.

Wikipedia: At War With Webcomics?

Apparently, the editorial policies at Wikipedia are making some people out there very unhappy. They’ve taken to deleting pages on webcomics, semi-pro football leagues, and other information they determine is “not notable.” Of course, the authors of those pages don’t particularly feel that they are “not notable,” and the resulting furor in their forums has resulted in a number of bannings.

I’m really not surprised at all this. Wikipedia does not have unlimited room. If every possible fact were crammed into it, it would then contain the sum total of all knowledge in the world — which would include one hell of a lot of trivia. I’m already unhappy enough with Google’s search routines; we don’t need a wiki so large its search engine runs on 40 Beowulf clusters cooled by liquid nitrogen beer and insulated by cereal. Needless to say, that’s just not going to happen. The Wiki editors have to pick and chose, and that means they have to establish criteria. Inevitably, articles by some authors just won’t make the grade, which means their work, their pride, joy (and ego) is going to lose a match with the delete button.

Instead of acting like the editors of Wikipedia are short-sighted fools for denying the author’s god-given right to a page on their favorite subject, it might behoove a few of the more motivated people to set up their own wiki project, based around their own interests.

But nobody would do that, would they?

Fortunately, I’m Not That Famous

Though I’m quite sure I’m on at least one blogroll of someone who is…

Strange Strangers

They flow in and out like the tide, these strange people who come to my blog. Most people are cool, but there are others who are not so.

These strange people read my blog for a while, and become “attached” to me somehow. They make the transference from passive reader to personal friend, all within their own minds. And I start getting emails from them, first expressing a desire to be my “buddy,” and when that goes unfulfilled, I get emails from them expressing irritation with me for not responding the way they expected me. Sometimes they threaten to “not be my friend” anymore (as if we ever were), eventually they start accusing me of being a fraud or being dishonest about my blog. They do this in hopes, I’m sure, that I will then start writing to them, and accept them as friend.

Hat tip to Confabulation.

Animé blogging will be slow for another few days. Working OT and and have a pair of articles to write for Houblog and blogHOUSTON.

I’m Baaaaaaaack!

Sorry if anyone wasn’t able to reach me last night. According to LGF, it was a cable cut in Atlanta that messed up everything.

(Just FYI, I’m not sure whats with all the HM-haters in that thread. They’ve always been responsive to my requests, although I could wish their site email was handled better. I hate not being able to reach my email because my employer blocks a couple of ports. It’s why I got an address from Dr.H.)

Crusaders (or Purveyors) of Crap

So, as readers may recall, I ordered two hentai games with my animé order last week, and it got in yesterday. I was pretty tired, but I figured, “what the hell,” and loaded up the bargain one: “Jewel Knights: Crusaders.” It installed just fine, and I started into the story. Pretty soon, I realized that yes, the auto-forward is a desirable feature. The story was just one click after another, as “I” talked about how I was king of the street fighters, the baddest baddass motherf-cker out there. I seem to be very impressed with myself. Very impressed. Probably five or six minutes of this, which I presume was to set the stage and explain to me who “I” was. The problem was, not only was I not liking me too much, but the picture I saw throughout all this (storefronts at night) never changed. And it was dull, not well done, and pretty uninteresting. Oh, and there’s NO sound or music. “Well, it’s a bargain game, I shoudln’t expect much.” So on I watch…

Yes, watch. I’m not making any choices. I haven’t met the girls for the first time yet; the blurb on the box says I meet them while looking for a street fight. I take it off auto-forward, but nothing changes. Click, click, click. I finally hear some sound, something breaking. Cue another minute of me gassing about how I can identify exactly what that sound is, because I’m so attuned to fights — I know it’s someone landing on a case of beer bottles and breaking them. How do I know this? Because I’m the baddest street fighter there is. I finally get around to checking up on the sound and meet the three Jewel Knights and the dominatrix they’re fighitng. Damn, they’re ugly. How do I mean that? As in “not attractive to men.” They’ve all got huge tits and nothing else going for them. Well, “I” end up getting knocked out in the ensuing fight, wake up in the hospital, and find the pink-haired one is now my nurse….

She’s dim, but sweet as hell. Gives me this bullshit story about her and the other girls are fighting against a 2,000 year old organization out to conquer the world. Yeah, right. Like some cartoon, or somethin’. I don’t believe a word of this shit, but hey, I’ll listen to a babe telling me stories any day. (Cue another 15 minutes of chit-chat, during which I meet the other two members of the team. They’re still not attractive. Especially the shy blond loli. The third member is, frankly, a smart-alec bitch.)

Someone needs to slap that blue-haired ho, and I’m just the guy to do it — as soon as I get out of this hospital bed. (Just as frankly, “I” deserve everything she’s giving me. I seem to be a complete and total reprobate as I describe hunting down and beating up some sixth-graders that had bullied me, putting them in the hosptial. I was a prodigy, then being only in the third grade. Anyway, after I beat them up, then I came to visit and steal their candy, presents, and meals. Yep, that’s me, all heart.) So hey, I’m like, all familiar with hospitals and such. Just not the view from my back, if you know what I mean.

So eventually, I’m all alone with the pink-haired babe again, who seems to be all worried about me. I think she likes me or somethin’. My neighbor chica shows up to check on me, the FINE one with purple hair (at last, an attractive female). I kid her about being my babe, but she disses me. S’ok, I’ll fix her when I get out too. But the pink-hair, she’s like, getting angry or something and starts making the evil eyes until my neighbor-girl leaves. Hey, damn, she’s like, jealous! She really does like me! Well, hey, an upstanding guy like me, I know exactly what kinda moves to put on a babelicous pink-haired sweetmeat like her!

StufDelivery

Well, my CardCaptor order came in today, along with the two games. However, thanks to the madhouse that is my job right now, I’m not up to starting any animé series… in fact I’m not really interested in going to the trouble of downloading anything I’ve been watching lately. I’m just going to take it easy tonight. Re-reading The Magic of Recluse, by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. Interesting storycrafting, in that it seemed to wander about going nowhere, but at the end I realized it had been headed to that finalé with a sense of purpose many authors fail to match. Curiously, that parallels the main character’s discovery of the principles of order and chaos — I rather suspect that was deliberate. Although I’m not sure I want to read much more of his writing if it’s always like that. I prefer a bit more action-oriented narrative, and while a lot happens to Lerris, it’s told in a very matter-of-fact, dry tone. Although, again, that matches the character and the story, so it was appropriate.

I guess it’s sort of like my reaction to Lain. Damn good story, very well told and I’d definitely recommend it if someone wanted to watch a good, thought-provoking animé. But it’s just not my speed. Except for the last two episodes, which I have watched three times now. Frankly, that mystifies me….There’s something about the wonder and joy of Lain overcoming her final trials, and accepting herself.

Not Valid for Some Values of “Today”

I got an amusing email from RightStuff about my order….

We are pleased to inform you that your order has shipped. Unless we contact you regarding a problem, you can count on your shipment leaving our warehouse within the next 2 business days.

I wonder how they would have reacted to me sending them an email upon order with the following: “I am pleased to inform you that I have paid for my order. Unless I contact you regarding a problem, I will mail a check within two days.” Somehow, I don’t think they would be amused.

Neither was I, actually, unless you count “cynically.” There’s a reason I prefer Robert, but he was out of the package deal on Cardcaptor Sakura.
