Why Didn’t I Think of That? (part 495)

Hey, anyone want to buy some Civility Offsets after posting something particularly nasty about the new animé season?

Not Much Exciting

Just to let everyone know that it’s not just WOW that’s wasting my time, I just remarked in an email: “I needed all my creative juices for Houblog today. And really, not a lot of animé is exciting me right now, so Bridgebunnies is getting the short end of the stick.

Hayate was kind of cute, but I find intrusive narrators to be tedious, even when they’re meant to be funny. Haven’t seen a sub of Nagarasette (sp? whatever), but the concept seemed stupid and the broadcast codes are keeping it from being any more “ecchi-taining.” Not to mention the fact that this being the same team that gave us Otome wa Boku is NOT a recommendation. Their art wasn’t quite as bad as Crescent Love by the end, but they were trying.”

And then I decided to copy it here as a post to fill you all in. Because I’m lazy.

The Eight-Sided Hexagon?

This is a cute idea for a contest involving one of the weirdest features in the solar system – one that proves there’s an exception to every rule, even “Nature abhors a straight line.”

The thing that bothers me is the number of contestants who refer to it as a stop sign.

This lack of clarity on the concept may explain a lot about the lack of driving skills exhibited by some people on the roadways. I also noticed that about a third of the people supposedly entering the contest didn’t even seem to understand what their entry was supposed to contain: a funny explanation.

Code Geass, ep. 22

I don’t have much to say on this, except: You know its going to go wrong from the moment Lelouch agrees with Euphie… but Oh. My. God. I didn’t expect it to go that wrong. Of all the things I expected, that wasn’t one of them…. No telling how this is going to work out, but it’s going to be bloody.

Correction: It’s already bloody, to the tune of several tens of thousands. I suppose I could put spoilers below the fold or something, but I want to process this for a bit. Well, no, really I just want to go play WOW now. Ah well, I guess Andrew was right….

Side note: I am really getting annoyed with Your-Mom’s cute little comments. I’m watching the show, not amateur comedy hour. I wish gg was keeping up the pace.

Edit: correction, Shinsen-Subs. I’m not sure, both may be doing it. I don’t understand that; you have so many series out there, and two or three groups will do the same one.

Vindication II

I originally posted this as an update to the earlier post, but changed my mind almost immediately and moved it to it’s own post, because the thought kept developing. In a response to the original article, I said:

Sure, the new software scrambles eggs, makes coffee, and doesn’t burn the toast. But how much time, effort, and MONEY is being sunk into dealing with these constant updates? The cost of the software and licenses is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s lost productivity, even without blowups like happened to Metafilter. Businesses can’t afford to replace the core of their daily operations every three years–it’s expensive and dangerous.

Now, add this into the mix.

Windows “Vienna” (formerly known as Blackcomb) is a codename for a future version of Microsoft Windows, originally announced in February 2000, but has since been subject to major delays and rescheduling. Microsoft now announced it will be released in 2009, and according to “Smart Computing In Plain English”, a techonology magazine, work on it began right after Windows Vista was released. As of February 2007, the name of the operating system used internally is undisclosed and is not used publicly by Microsoft, though “Windows 7” has been noted in job postings as a working name for the project.

So, right about the time I’m going to give up and move to Vista, the next O/S will be out… after only two years.

I’m sure the Microsoft fanboys will be lining up to purchase it. Me, I’ll be across the street, picking up a used abacus at the antique store.

One argument I’ve had advanced against me in the past during these rants is that “Well Microsoft has to make money somehow, what do you have against that.” The answer is “nothing” as far as that goes. The problem is, it’s an asinine argument. Bill Gates’ need to make a living; hell, Microsoft’s need to make a profit should not automatically translate to “Ubu Roi needs a new operating system.”

Bluntly put, it is the surest proof of Microsoft’s monopoly (which the Justice Department left intact) that they can create their own demand. Enron has NOTHING on Microsoft, except prison sentences.

Posting’s Really Going to Slow Down Now…

I have been seduced by the Horde side. I’ve only played a couple of nights so far, but WOW looks like a pleasant enough diversion until I can upgrade to a system that can handle Vanguard:SOH. And $15 a month isn’t as cheap as fansubs…but only so long as those fansubs aren’t imported to R1 and I have to buy them.

I’m annoyed that someone already had my name of choice on the server where I’m joining Master Plan and DrHeinous. Imagine, if you will, a seven-foot tall, purple-skinned troll…

…named “Kogal.”

I knew those hentai games I bought a while back were going to be a bad influence on me.

Heh. Vindication.

And some people wonder why I’m retro about Microsoft and won’t allow any automatic updates of any software on my system, let alone the O/S.

20070325.1520: Oh, the joy that is Microsoft. Metafilter is down right now because an “automatic server update” installed last night completely fucked over the servers.

I just ran updates for the first time in lo, these many months, and part of what I got was IE7. But the joy that is Microsoft includes the joy that is how Microsoft redefines the English Language. For instance, clicking the box that says “Do not show me this update again” means “put up an emphatic error announcement indicating that you’ve clicked ‘do not show me this again’ on the main update pane”.

McAfee also displays this obnoxious behavior, which is why I ripped it the hell off my hard drive. I’d rather be vulnerable to viruses that MAY hit me than annoying and misleading messages that WILL hit me every time I reboot.

Look, my copy of XP is legit. But whether it was or was not, why would I need a program installed on my computer that verified that it was legit? If it is legit (which it is) then the program is redundant. And if my copy was not legit, then the last thing I’d want would be a program that detected that fact and proceeded to shut my system down or seriously cripple it. Stupid, stupid, stupid…

The main reason I don’t want it is that if I get a false negative, my computer goes south, and just having the sucker there means it’s using disk space and CPU time checking on things however often it runs. I can see no “advantage” whatsoever for me in having that damned thing on my computer.

Precisely. Why should I spend $200 to upgrade to an annoying piece of bloatware, when what I have works fine? Oh, Vista will force my hand eventually, by being the only O/S to include DirectX10. And sooner or later, some game or DVD player will require it and force me to upgrade. And THAT, folks, is why I hate Bill Gates in a nutshell. Screw Big Brother, Bill is the one who’s trying to take control of my computer.
