Mob Intelligence

So Shamus was talking about his experiences in WoW, which I have recently become bored with (too many Donnys), and I saw the following in the comments, which I had to expropriate:

The IQ of the dumbest member of the group divided by the number in the group equals the intelligence of a given mob.

Or to make it sound a little better: “The intelligence of a mob is equal to the IQ of the dumbest member divided by the number of people in the group.”

I’m sure the jackasses ganking everyone in Gadgetzan the other night would disagree. “Huh, huh, huh, u suxxorz! I keel u!”

Or, given that they were Horde: “KEK!!!!!”

A Pass, Once Again

Steven was soliciting feedback on a specific* purchase over at Chizumatic, when I noticed something odd: once again, he’s skipping the rest of The Third: The Girl With the Blue Eye. I’m not complaining, or saying “Steven ought to try…”**

It’s just an observation: if it couldn’t keep his interest, even with its stellar voice cast and characters like Honoka and Bogie, then I was probably right when I said it just didn’t have enough plot. Probably should have been a half-season series; 13 episodes at best.

For anyone else reading this, if this comes out in a bargain thinpack, I’d recommend picking it up. Yes, the narrator is damnned annoying, and Iks is a bland bishie; a walking, talking tofu-pop. But for me, the paydirt was the final face-off between Honoka and Blue Breaker, several episodes before the end of the series. It didn’t go anything at all like I expected.

I’d certainly rate it higher than Gravion. Damn, I’m stuck at the end of DVD 2, and considering adding a “No Mecha” to my heuristic too.

*(Specific, meaning don’t go over there and say “You might want to look at…” And don’t use my blog to do it either. Sturgeon’s Law applies to suggestions too, and he gets cranky when folks don’t understand that.)

Maid Guy #9

At long last, the drought has ended, and Maid Guy #9 has been fansubbed. Praise the Lord and pass the milk jug, we’re going to the Sweet Holstein Cake Shoppe! Yes, indeedy, the new Maid Guy was the very breast episode yet.

Application Criteria: “Girls with breasts larger than D-cup. For every centimeter larger than 95cm, 50 yen will be added to your wage. Anything less than D-cup will not be recognized as breasts. B and A-cups with large stupid gaps for cleavage are absolutely out of the question. Are they even really breasts?”

Well, I think the question deserves close examination. Very close examination.

Wait….um, what was the question again?

De Spleen!

I made a somewhat cranky remark over on Chizumatic, and Steven seemed to think I was dissing Strike Witches. Not exactly — maybe Japanese WWII denial in general, but it’s a well known phenomenon that keeps their neighbors a little antsy. That’s not the real problem. Yes, changing Japan to the “Fuso Empire” and wiping out Germany, Italy, and half of Russia in the initial invasion definitely removes any nitpicking problems with undesirable historical facts.

I’m not complaining, and it’s very necessary to the story. I’m just sort of cynically amused/angered at the comparison that insists on running through my head: a Hollywood version would have started the invasion in 1968 Vietnam, with the My Lai massacre in gloriously revolting detail, and the American flag flying over it all. The heroes would have been some little brown people from Laos or Cambodia of course, not (white) members of some evil, dominating, colonial western regime.

As far as I’m concerned, mere whitewashing and denial is so much cleaner than all the false anguish and emotional histrionics/seppuku that our entertainment industry likes to indulge in. Speaking of which, couldn’t we just prevail on some new age guru to sell these jet-set liberals some indulgences, so they’ll go away and leave us alone? Oh, wait, I forgot, they call it Scientology. Well, it’s not like Hollyweird would accept such from the corrupt Roman Catholic Church.

Bah. You know, I just got back from a meeting of local bloggers talking about problems in Houston, and I think I’m very cranky as a result.

Gravion, Sorta Twittered

So far, I’m getting a very Godannar-ish vibe after two episodes, and that’s not good.

Luna is cute, but she’s no Shizuru.

Yeah, cute. NSFW Lamerosity: the speed with which a show becomes lame and predictable.
And they’re — uh, she’s variable sized too.

Short Notes

I didn’t remember Devil Hunter Yoko was that ecchi. Of couse, it was the 80’s; everything had gratuitous breasts back then. (One area in which the modern world is not an improvement, IMHO.)

Caught Strike Witches at CrunchyRoll. I’m sold on this show, it’s the early winner for summer. It’s hitting all the right notes since it toned down the fanservice for episode 2. I picked up the $5 version, which I don’t think is really any better than the $3 version; you just get 2 extra types of file and an animated GIF. Next week, I’ll grab the $3 version and compare. I’m downloading it right now, but it’s a 300+ MB .avi file, which makes me think they have crappy compression. Thirty minute DL; I don’t have a super fast connection.

Gravion, Grenadier or Witchblade next? Or load up Mai’s episodes in Kanon?

Hm. Gravion it is…. tomorrow, I think.

Update: Steven gave it a try too. Yes, CR’s offer of SW is legit…for that series. They’re just using the same mechanism CR has been using to “request” donations all along, and Gonzo gets a cut. CR has a lot of pirated programs too, and the interesting thing is, Gonzo didn’t demand that CR eliminate all piracy from their site before letting them have their shows. I figure they’re “agreeing to disagree” long enough to see if it’s a moneymaker, and if it is, CR will shed their pirate roots and “go legit” if they can get enough other studios to sign on.

I disagree about the resolution; I think it’s HD… in a small format, about 740 * 480? It does look a bit fuzzy when expanded to full screen, but it’s far better than the streamed version, which had heavy pixelating. So far, I see this:

Pluses:
It’s legal.
There’s no wait for a fansubbing group that *might* do it. (Kamen no Maid Guy, anybody? Anybody????)
The sub quality is not perfect, but above average. Certainly above some groups I’ve watched.
No DRM at Crunchy!!!!

Minuses:
Video quality is acceptable, but not up to DVD standards. I would not watch on a full size TV, I think.
Larger than normal file size.

So I can wait an unknown amount of time, pay nothing, and torrent a higher quality video, with a possibly iffy translation, or I can immediately go to CR and pay $3 for a slightly lower quality video. Damn, we’re getting there. This is actually a “decision point” for me; I’m not sure which way I’d go in general. If I had a larger monitor, it’s definitely a “no” because of the video quality. But Gonzo isn’t going to want to take the video up a notch on DRM-less files; the obvious trap is that Gonzo wants us to buy the program now to enjoy it, and then when the DVD’s come out, go “ooh, real HD, I’ve got to have it!” In short, use CR to undercut the moochers, and market the DVD’s to the collectors who have the disposable income.

It’s sad to see that they think their fans are that dumb. What’s sadder is, I think I just might be, for shows that are as good as Strike Witches is turning out to be….

JB: Regarding DHY, the transformation sequence stays, but yes, the episodes are toned down.
