For a Few Animé More…

So, a few more premieres, and a second episode or two. Well, one. I’m not touching either Casshern or Kurrogane. But Akane-iro is out, and before wrapping this up, we’ll see if it has been swallowed by the yawning pit of mediocrity.

First, some more first episodes, though. I’m not going to try to slot them in with the others, because they all have one thing in common: they’re horror stories, and I’ve discovered I don’t really have a strong interest in those.

Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji): Whomever put this down as a comedy was out of their mind. Yes, there’s some comedic elements, based around three inept servants to the young master, but it’s pretty obvious that this is a horror series, very much in the tradition of Edgar Allen Poe. It’s even got a 19th century feel to it — which is to be expected as it’s evidently set in 19th century Britain. One thing is absolutely clear — the butler, Sebastian, is not human, but supernatural. Whether he has his young “master’s” best interests at heart remains to be seen, and I suspect the answer may be no. This episode does “creepy” very well, giving me vibes reminiscent of The Cask of Amontillado. What you see isn’t what your getting, as becomes evident in the second half of the story…

Ga-rei Zero: In a word — bloodbath. Another horror show that doesn’t seem to match the descriptions at all. Monsters in Tokyo, and two (?) secret government agencies trying to fight them. I’m seeing some infighting and thought I was getting a pretty good grip on what appeared to be a fairly clichéd show. Bubblegum Crisis crossed with Ghost in the Shell, crossed with, um, I don’t know, a very dark, violent, and bloody Ghostbusters? Then the last five minutes hit… I’m really not sure what’s going on here after all, but I can tell you one thing… (big spoiler) they’re going to have to introduce a new cast in the second episode. We spend the show getting to know these people, some of whom are straight out of central casting…. and then they all die. Badly. WTF?

Chaos;Head: Taku isn’t just a messed-up teen about to end up with a harem of sorts, he’s seriously a seriously-delusional near-hikkimori in severe need of medication. And he (sort-of) thinks he’s in an ero-game, or rather, that he’s in serious danger from the women around him, who are obviously trying tricks on him from various ero games so they can make him the latest victim of their serial murders. The hardest part about this show is figuring out exactly where the line is between his fantasies, delusions, paranoia, and reality. Most of the time, it’s obvious. Sometimes, it isn’t….and that’s not helped by the fact that there really are some murders going on, and somehow, he got a web-link to pictures of one… the day before it happened. Mystery, cute girls, blood, and a protagonist who lives in a cargo container on the rooftop of a building. I don’t see A/C, how does he keep the computer from overheating? Horror with a whiff of comedy and ero-game pedigree.

Shikabanehime: Another horror series, and although it’s supposed to be about the Corpse Princess, it seems the plot (what there is of it) is going to follow Kagami, eldest of several children adopted by a Buddhist priest and (I presume) his wife. Secretly, the priest is supporting a dead girl in her fight against other corpses on the side. Unknown to anyone else, Kagami discovers this, but keeps it secret that he knows. He idolizes the priest as an older brother. Strangely, Kagami has no fear of death, corpses, or spirits, nor of the talking cat which keeps crossing his path whenever the girl does, but he still decides it’s time to move out. The set-up is taking it’s time, and I don’t have a good sense of where it’s going with the two protagonists. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

As for Akane-iro, episode 2… well it’s not exactly a yawning pit of mediocrity yet, but it is a bit more ordinary. We learn a bit more about the background of the arranged marriage, and the reason they don’t recognize each other is because they’d never met. I was right about the parents too. It’s still a little offbeat; Katagiri is still a yandere, and it may well be that she hates him not so much for the mistaken kiss as for the fact that she’s against an arranged marriage to start with. Adding one to the other though, definitely hurt. And of course there was an accidental groping this episode. Looks like that’s going to be the problem every episode; the moment they start acting like there might be a thaw in the cold war, something contrived will happen and she’ll be on his case again.

So Far… Not too Bad (Updated with more Kemeko DX)

Ok, the extra screenshots took a lot longer than I expected, because I took more than just three of them, and I had to move files back and forth across two computers. Wish I could figure out whats up with that, dammit… I should probably write a more witty and entertaining introduction, but my laziness is kicking in now. (As always.) So, it’s not a Derailed by Darry thin-slicing, but it is my thoughts on the first episodes I’ve watched. And yes, this time I’m actually posting them instead of letting them sit until the season’s over!

Weirder things have happened…

Anyway, this season is turning out to be a bit of a surprise. Unlike last season, which looked awful and turned out to be as bad as it looked, there’s several tolerable series out there, and a couple of LCD’s that might turn out to be halfway decent. (Lowest Common Denominators, otherwise known as trashy fanservice shows.) So get on with it, already.

(Edit: just realized I forgot to say, this is a worst-to-best ranking. Duh.)

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka

Well so far, this one an early winner.

“Juunichi’s in an arranged marriage, and his fiancé unexpectedly shows up at his school as a transfer student one day. The two immediately get into a huge fight and want nothing to do with each other. Their parents lay down the law and order the two to begin regularly going out together, which only brings more problems and chaos to their lives.”

Naturally, the first thing I think of is Ai Yori Aoshi, with a twist — and maybe it will end up that way. This is (unsurprisingly) a hentai high-school romance game adaptation with more pretty girls than you can shake a stick at. (Edit: Mild fanservice, mostly hemline-level shots, but no panties at all.) Therefore, you’ll excuse me if I was completely confused by the opening, which involved a guy breaking into what appeared to be a nuclear power plant, freeing a hostage, and escaping while said plant blows up. If they were doing an action show, that was not a bad segment at all. (Much superior to the opening of Casshern, about which the less said, the better.)

I think it’s going to turn out that the hero of that segment, and the foxy adult woman we see working with that hero in the OP, are Juunichi’s secret-agent parents. At least it would explain why he and his too cute-and-spunky-for-words sister are alone in their house. However, the blurb is a bit of a spoiler, as it’s obvious that the two protagonists don’t know (or perhaps remember) each other at all. Thanks to a random encounter, they’re actually on the way to developing a positive relationship, but you know that can’t happen, otherwise where’s the comedy? Oh, right, Ai Yori Aohsi. (Like I said, “where’s the comedy?”)

Tongues start wagging at the school when everyone realizes the cute new rich transfer student knows the school’s most famous delinquent — although they don’t recognize each other, he helped her out in a pinch the day before. There’s an element of attraction, which Katagiri is trying to deny, when Juunichi’s brain short-circuits and he gets ahead of himself (and her) by a few light years. Forget “wrathful loli,” Katagiri — oh wait, don’t forget the term, she’s voiced by Rie Kugimiya — unloads on him with murderous intent. If it weren’t for knowing, “Hey, that’s Rie Kugimyia,” a viewer could be excused for being surprised by the character at that point. Katagiri actually has a somewhat weak, sweet and innocent, easily flustered side to her, and it’s all we’ve seen up until that point. It’s just that romance comedies require either a yandere or a tsundere, and she’s playing the former for once, not the latter. She’s an unassuming, very polite oujo-sama — until the gloves come off, and then the pain starts.

Despite that rather clichéd element, the writing and dialogue in the first episode is a joy. Whether it’s little sister Minato (played by Aya Hirano) scolding Juunichi for skipping his homework, or his somewhat Ishigari-like (ref. Yumeria) homeroom teacher doing the same (and purposely tossing in yaoi vibes just to get Yuuichi’s goat), or his friends spreading the ridiculous legend of “Geno Killer” by which they’ve given the unassuming Juunichi a fearsome reputation, as of the first episode, this show has taken the usual stale elements of a romantic comedy and made them look fresh and new.

Without the blurb, you’d have no idea that there’s an arranged marriage set up. It’s not exactly referenced, and there’s no scenes to explain it. After everything’s happened, and Juunichi’s nursing a headache from Katagiri’s violent outburst, everyone is surprised when she shows up on his doorstep with a suitcase and announces that she’s his fiancé — and moving in.

And of course we end with another mysterious segment, in which it’s obvious someone is spying on them. But are the mecha and UFO we see in the OP/ED actually elements in the story? And is the alter ego in Juunichi’s head (do you know how hard it is not to type “Yuuichi” every damn time?) for real, or just a bit of poetic license? Probably the latter, but I can’t rule it out…

Can this series keep it up? We shall see…

Edited the above for a bit of clarity. Also, I’m probably going to check Kannagi and Kurrogane no Linebarrel next, but that’s tomorrow. It’s past Ubu’s bed time right now.

Toradora

Less Taiga Aisaka, more Ryuuji’s MILF, please.

Jeez, Taiga’s a klutzy, ungrateful, violent, flat-chested piece of work, isn’t she? It’s like watching an inept Shana. If this is a comedy, I forgot to laugh, so I think I’ll pass on this show.
