Oh, The Horror!

As in science-fiction horror. A while back, I watched Divergence Eve, which I found to be a great story, somewhat lessened by its unnecessary and excessive fanservice. Well, today, I lucked on the second half of the story, Misaki Chronicles, at Best Buy for $13 each. Can’t beat that with a stick. I know what I’m watching this week…

Update: Watched DVD 1 tonight. Oh, my effing gawd….. I just thought Divergence Eve was good….If I didn’t have to work tomorrow, there’s no way in hell I’d sleep tonight, I HAVE to watch all 3 DVD’s. The torture of not being able to—-WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!

AMG2 Coming!

What a night for surfing the internet. Just found over at ANN:

ADV Films Acquires Oh! My Goddess Season 2
As mentioned in our interview with Mike Bailiff, ADV Films has acquired the second season of the Oh! My Goddess TV series (season one was released by Media Blasters). No details regarding the cast or the release are available yet.

Yay! Now I need to finish off Season 1. I kept getting distracted by Godannar and Mars Daybreak. What can I say? Isn’t this distracting to you? (NSFW!!!)

Is Cancer Next?

OH MY F’ING GOD. Just found on Instapundit:

A CURE FOR DIABETES?

In a discovery that has stunned even those behind it, scientists at a Toronto hospital say they have proof the body’s nervous system helps trigger diabetes, opening the door to a potential near-cure of the disease that affects millions of Canadians.

Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Dr. Michael Salter, a pain expert at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. “Mice with diabetes suddenly didn’t have diabetes any more.”

Don’t get too excited yet, but let’s hope this pans out. If it does, we’ll have to wonder what else we’ve been missing in diseases we thought we understood.

My father died from complications of diabetes, and I am borderline diabetic myself. Several of my co-workers are diabetic and had to take early retirement. All suffered from complications. This could be huge, even if it were only diabetes. The kicker? It’s not–although the treament doesn’t directly have anything to do with other diseases, it marks a radical change in how we think neuropathic diseases work.

They also conclude that there are far more similarities than previously thought between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and that nerves likely play a role in other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as asthma and Crohn’s disease.

The “paradigm-changing” study opens “a novel, exciting door to address one of the diseases with large societal impact,” said Dr. Christian Stohler, a leading U.S. pain specialist and dean of dentistry at the University of Maryland, who has reviewed the work.

You see, all along, we’ve been thinking “the pancreas stops making insulin.” A while back it was discovered that it still makes insulin — it just isn’t releasing it because the tiny production “islets” are inflammed. By injecting a simple extract of chili peppers to kill the pain nerves in the pancreas, the inflamation went away, and the pancreas’ of the test mice started producing insulin again. Stranger still, insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes) dropped dramatically after the treatments.

Let’s hear it for lab mice. Next time someone says “animal testing is inhumane,” I suggest giving them a few chronic diseases.

I Never Learn Either

Sigh. I’m having an energetic discussion on the subject of separation of church and state animé and politics, over at Jason’s place. About 20 comments down.

Considering that some people have a religious fervor about their politics (and I mean that in the sense of strength of conviction and utter lack of logic), maybe I shouldn’t have done the strikeout above…..

Holy Christmas, Er, Animé Day!

Rather annoyed by the fooraw up in Seattle about an Xmas display, and the made-up holiday of Kwanza, Steven decided a new holiday was needed.

If Ron Karenga can do it, so can I. The newly-formed Otaku religion celebrates Anime Day on December 25. It’s a jenn-you-wine traditional Japanese holiday (that I just made up) which otaku celebrate by putting up life-sized cardboard cutouts of Sailor Moon. We demand that Usagi be placed next to Rabbi Bogomilsky’s menorah, and if they won’t do that then we’ll sue.

Unfortunately, there’s already a schism underway if he thinks Sailor Moon is an appropriate icon for Animé day! There is only one Goddess of Animé Day, and thou shalt worship no graven images before her!

Dual! vs. Tenchi Muyo

Steven Den Beste has been writing about his disappointment in the supposed ending to the Tenchi Muyo series. He’s really not happy with it, and one of his major disappointments is in how Tenchi never gets his act together and becomes, well, a man who knows what he wants to do and who he wants to be.

In a way, I’m not surprised that’s how it turned out. I remember watching the original series about ten years ago, and being incredibly aggravated after a dozen episodes because it didn’t look like the series was actually going anywhere. Everytime what should have been a turning point showed up, the story just wandered back off course, and I now realize it was because Tenchi never got a grip, and frankly, neither did his father or grandfather. Someone should have taken charge and said “ok, there’s a bunch of crazy stuff going on here — we need to fill Tenchi in and decide what to do, because clearly, staying out of the way on Earth isn’t working any more.” But that would have ruined their premise, which was a high-school kid on Earth surrounded by beautiful alien women vying for his attention. Note: when your premise and your plot conflict, change one of them!

Frankly, the same creators did a better job with Dual! While the backstory was less coherent, Kazuki had a grip from the get-go. Confronted with weird visions he couldn’t understand, he didn’t just suffer, he put together a popular website, and essentially, blogged about what he saw. Dumped into an alternate world, confronted by one of the giant robots from his vision and an injured pilot, he instinctively tried to help. Finding himself able to control the robot and fight, he defeated the enemy robot, then he went to get help for the pilot. Recruited, he doesn’t want to fight — it terrifies him, and he finds one of the conditions imposed on him horribly embarassing. But he swallows his fear and choses to fight because he realizes it’s the only way he’s going to get back home. Then when he does get back home, he chooses to go back and help the friends he’s made because he cares about them.

In the end, while he hasn’t made “the decision,” it’s clear that he’s got two favorites, and the others are also-rans. He clearly wants to remain friends with them all– if need be, he’ll alter the world to do that. Because of that, I can understand why women are drawn to him. Tenchi, on the other hand, is far more powerful, but a complete, wishy-washy nebbish.

I know Tenchi was far and away more popular, but I have some faint hope that maybe one day they’ll come back and do a continuation of Dual! as well.

Meloncholy Brewing

From ANS (the only place it’s harder to link stories than Chizumatic),

12-6-06 (3:47PM EST)—- Haruhi Suzumiya Surprise Announcement Brewing
News out of the Japanese Language SOS email magazine indicates an unspecified announcement regarding the franchise will be made at year’s end.

If it’s that MoHS is getting a second season in fall 2007, we heard that one already. If it’s that MoHS has a R1 license… well now that we haven’t heard. And would like to.

If you have any complaints about the spelling above, I was thinking about Big Mikuru at the time… that should explain it.
