Hekiyou Academy’s Student Council Activities, ep.2

No, it’s not a review, and I’m too lazy to add screenshots tonight. I just wanted to make a quick post that it’s strange how this show has been the winner so far, when I ridiculed and ruled it out to start.

I still have doubts that the concept can carry an entire season, but from what I read, they’re skipping the early “no plot” novels and quickly jumping into the later ones, which were more eventful. And in the meantime, they’re still playing against expectations. So far, Ken is, if not a manly man, at least not totally crap and an embarrassment to the human race as a leading man. (Heaven’s Lost Property, I’m lookin’ at you.) He’s focused on “winning the game” yet nice to the girls, a hard worker even if he has to sneak around to do it, and surprisingly perceptive for someone whose reality seems filtered through ero-games.

Still, it’s an indication of how weak this season is, if this is the best we have for autumn.

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari (War on Geminar)

Yay, Tenchi spin-off.

As expected, the only thing it’s got in common is the main character’s design and name. Oh, and a harem that comes into being for even LESS reason than Tenchi’s. Of course, all the girls, queen included (but not the the suspicious tsundere), start falling for Kenichi the instant they lay eyes on him. It must be in the Masaki genome.

Run away! It’s suckage…

Steven tried Suomomo Momomomomoommmo whatever… He had me scared for a bit when he said it made him laugh a couple of times, and what with all the screenshots, I thought he actually liked it.

It’s in my “gave up after 1-3 episodes” list. Three years ago, the sum total I had to say about it was:

I found the premise of this show repulsive, the male lead an uninteresting jerk, and the female lead unattractive, not to mention a flatchested loli. Unattractive = bad. Flatchested = bad. Loli = illegal. Flatchested, unattractive loli should = illegal. (At least Louise was cute.)

I just couldn’t deal with a female lead whose motivation was “I’m a failure at being the ultimate warrior so I have do what daddy says and start popping out babies.” And she was enthusiastic about it. Oh, and I’d rather have someone shred my ears with a cheese grater than listen to an entire series of that seiyuu.

I mean, when it comes to my Worst of 2006, this studio can legitimately claim to have been gypped. It so deserved a spot in the bottom ten… At least in the Honorable Mentions.

Villianous City of Heroic Champions Online

A post in which we pretty much forget to review any of the games or compare them to each other, but instead waste time posting pictures of our anime-themed characters. What can I say? It seemed like the thing to do.

This is what happens when I try to create a copy of Koyomi, from Yokuwakaru Gendimahou. In my first attempt (unmentionable), I couldn’t find the dress options, nor half of the chest options. I think the the costume interface logic was created by a German munchkin.

I really liked City of Heroes/Villains much better — although, it isn’t quite as flexible, it has many more options (having had several years to perfect them.

Ito Nobunaga is an anime otaku planning on world domination. He’s the last descendant of the famous Japanese samurai — or so he believes. However, one should never ask him either of the following questions:
1. How do you know you’re the last descendant?
2. Wait, don’t Japanese family names come first?
It’s possible that he’s not wrapped as tightly as the hilt of his genuine historic imitation samurai sword (bought at a renaissance festival).

And this, by God, is why City of Heroes kicks Champions’ ass: You can do an honest to goodness Japanese seifuku! Well, except for the socks, or the Absolute Distance. But it’s really damn close, isn’t it? With cat ears!

Quitting While Ahead?

Looks like Crunchyroll picked up half the new season. That’s good, in that I can watch whatever and don’t have any obligation buys since it’s licensed and what not, but it’s bad because I don’t have a copy to keep. Worse, I’m at the mercy of my net connection which seems… squirrely, once again. Lots of lag. Last Saturday, I was finally forced off Champions Online due to losing connectivity.

Ok, on with the show(s):

The Record of Hekiyou Academy’s Student Council Activities

I’ve been checking out first episodes this weekend, even of series I’ve said I wouldn’t follow. Yes, this is the one that has the “yearned for harem.”

It also has two hilarious minutes of opening dialog It’s an extended series of anime in-jokes, but they’re not obscure, and they bitingly funny.

On whiteboard: “Understanding differences between media”

Student council prez, aka “Little Red”: You guys need to understand different forms of media!
Guy, aka Sugisaki: Huh?
Manga girl, aka Minatsu: Are we really getting an anime? After all, it’s ‘Seitokai no Ichizon’
Studious girl, aka Chizaru: Some people thin a drama CD would be enough.
Laptop girl, aka Mafuyu: Amazon’s review says: ‘All the volumes are the same. It’s like there’s no plot.’
Prez: No masochistic jokes! Anyways this is the first step toward the Hekiyou Schools Student Council’s world domination. Having more pocket change won’t be a dream any more if we can pull off a successful mixture of different types of media!
Everyone: Pocket change?

Then it starts mercilessly skewering… itself, and quite a bit else. Dragonball and Kyoto Animation were favored targets, though the there were a number of self-referential jokes.

Manga girl: We need to be more anime-like if we want to be made into an anime
Laptop girl: But that’ll clash with the original work–
Prez: Challenge! An anime that takes place in a single room goes only in the Sunday evening slot!
Manga girl: Yeah! Yeah! Only action films can go on the big screen! That’s right! Collect seven of that something and any wish will come true!

Well, I”m not going to type the whole thing out, but it was actually quite funny, and the episode wasn’t half-bad either. It’s not just the preview; the occasional genre savvy and “know-it’s-a-show” jokes occur during the episode too. At one point, Mafuyu, is updating the wiki walkthrough for the game based on the novels! On another occasion, Sugisaki objects that the girls aren’t reacting the same as in the novel, and the prez refers back to the scene at the beginning.

(Rest of my comments got chopped off during posting and I didn’t notice until too late to recover them. Below is a summary.)

I don’t think there’s enough plot here for a series, but then, there wasn’t for Lucky Star either. The show will be made or broken by the guy in the middle. I don’t think it’s going to make it but the seiyuu all sound like they are having fun. I might try another episode just to see if this one is a fluke, but it looks like we’re going to get “intro eps” for each of the girls next.
