Index’s Power

At Chizumatic, Steven remarks in the comments,

“The potential present in the premise about Index is intriguing, but if it were fully developed she’d be too strong, too overwhelming.”

Indeed. In The Dresden Files, (series) the author takes the concept and runs with it in one book. With a small girl, no less. (I wonder if he was reading the manga….) And yes, she’s insanely powerful; she holds off three major demons with ridiculous ease. They only defeated her by luring her into a trap that cut off the flow of magic; once she exhausted her innate supply, she was vulnerable.

(Posted this bit of nothing here, since Steven doesn’t like sidetracks)

In any case, I’m downloading the season, and will give it a second chance; apparently it finishes strongly with an arc about the Railgun. Which I’m still following that series, and Kampfer. Don’t ask me why I’m still following Kampfer.

Mahoromatic Tadaima Okaeri

I watched part of this earlier, but am I correct in assuming that this is a new OVA set in the middle of the original series? Looks like they were trying to say it was at the point where Mahoro has only 270 days left.

Is it just an “extra” adventure or is it an attempt to rewrite the end of the series? And what does Tadaima Okaeri mean? SFW didn’t bother to translate it, nor some signs and flashed graphics that might have been important.

My mind comes up with seriously weird stuff when I’m half-awake.

Not Exactly a Hiatus, but Effectively…

…yeah, going to be slow around here for a while. I’ve been running flat out to meet my work and non-work commitments, and as a result, I’m exhausted. The only anime I’ve had time for in the last 2 weeks was to rewatch the first episode of Grenadier. It was nice to watch the original Rushuna, the source of the standard measurement by which all other busty anime women are judged.

Yojiro, Yatchan as Rushuna names him, is one lucky (and talented) bastard. Against any lesser woman, he’d be the hero of the show. In the opening episode, he deflects bullets with his katana, survives a 200 foot drop off a cliff — onto rocks — with only a minor injury that might have been from a bullet, not the fall, and to top it all off, he meets Rushuna and gets put into marshmallow hell — underwater, with her being buck naked.

If he weren’t an anime character, I’d have to kill him for that…

Need a Recommendation

I have a need for a mapping program or app similar to the Google user maps. I need to be able to put addresses in and have them marked on the map. It needs to be persistent, that is, not disappear when I shut it down. Writing data out to a file is a major plus. Ideally, the program will allow sharing and collaboration, and if it’s a web app (acceptable for the short run) it needs to have some kind of privacy or security.

Can anyone recommend something really cheap (under $50) or even free?

Geaux Saints

As some of you may recall, I am a big New Orleans Saints fan. A couple of years ago, Wonderduck and I put our front pages on the line when his Bears met my Saints in the NFC championship. Sadly, he won that match.

But seven weeks into this season, the New Orleans Saints don’t look like they’re going to let ANYTHING stop them this year. Ok, there’s still a bunch of weeks left in the season, and anything can happen… but seriously OUCH on the Dolphins today. I didn’t get to watch the whole thing (if the Cowgirls are playing up in Dallas, they’ll be on TV here), but I caught the tail end of it. I’d heard the score; that they were behind 24-3 just before the half, and thought “damn, I guess they’re having a bad week; probably got full of themselves after the Giants.” Then I saw they scored just before the half. “Cool. Maybe they can make a game out of it.”

Did they EVER. The final score? NO 46 MIA 34. After just ten more points allowed in the third, the Saints D just shut Miami down. Worse, as Miami tried to recoup, they started making mental mistakes, just wilting under the pressure: Fumbling out of bounds to stop the clock (Illegal forward pass, loss of down), an interception, illegal motion penalties, and the capper: with Miami at first and goal, and managing to stop the clock with one second left, time then expired due to a penalty!

The only sad note is that mother is no longer around to see it; she was as big and excitable a Saints fan as there ever was, and we never had the money to take her to a game in the Superdome until she was too old to make the trip.
