Very Little Time

For anime or blogging. Dropped Kurokami; I’ve gotten tired of watching Kuro get the crap kicked out of her. Sure she wins most of the time, but it’s abuse porn until then. Love the ED though, it’s definitely in my playlist right now.

Still watching Druaga. Broke down and downloaded Nanoha. Sigh, on my obligation list now. It really kicked ass around episodes 6-7, but it slowed down badly just before the final battle, and then I found the “wrap-up” episode to be syrupy and tedious. Might have just been my mood. I’ll wait until I’m able and buy the rest though, it was good enough for that.

I rewatched the episodes of Negima!? I originally downloaded and compared it to the final arc of the original Negima! series. I can see why the second got the kudos it did, but I still have some problems with it. I think it’s partly the opening of the first episode (which looks far more serious and dramatic than the series is) misleading me, and partly the obvious anachronisms and irregularities in the storyline. Too many points where logic got thrown to the winds, and I hate that. We’re supposed to believe Negi’s in fear of being turned into an animal if he screws up and lets the secret of magic out, when a pair of misshapen animals are walking around talking to students? We’re not supposed to notice Chamo playing cards with the girls when the only one that knows he’s special is Asuna? Come on.

Also following Munto. It’s not bad, but the storytelling just isn’t grabbing me, and the characters aren’t pulling me in either. They’re filling in backstory now, which is helping, but not enough. My favorite character so far is one of the relatively minor ones; leader of the battle forces of a small nation that switched sides in the war. Nothing really fazes her and she’s obviously pretty badass, plus has a sense of honor.

Probably going to watch Battle Valkyries in the new season, just to torture Dr. Heinous. He showed me the game last time I was up there; it looked and played pretty good. I kibbitzed his playing for a while — “Maybe if you get a sniper up on the building? You’ve got too many lancers on your team.” It was pretty obvious that you had to put some thought into picking your team members for each mission. No idea if the animé is going to be any good though. And yes, I’ll probably watch that silly show with the girl carrying the cream jug. What the hell, I enjoyed Sekirei. Even went back and rewatched the last episode. It was still hilarious watching Yume fighting while holding one hand over her ponderous breasts. (she’d ah, lost everything but her apparently titanium panties earlier in the fight). Have to wonder if that was animated differently for the DVD release? Quite possible considering episode #8.

Dr. H is rambling about firing up his blog and starting to talk about animé he’s watching. (Neo-Ranga; I loaned it to him on his last trip down here.) I think I know what show he owes us all a paragraph or two on. 🙂

  1. Nanoha A’s is much better than Nanoha was, including having a better ending. But yeah, the first series really improves starting when Chrono first shows up.

  2. Speaking of Dr. H, didn’t he promise us to write about Divergence Eve and Misaki Chronicles? And never did?

It’s a shame about Kurokami; it showed a lot of potential during the first two episodes but quickly turned into yet another Generic Fighting Anime. I may just wait for the DVDs to see the rest.

Munto TV (it’s funny how everyone calls it that instead of Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai) has been very meh for me so far. I’ve heard it’s only 9 episodes, with the first six being mostly recycled from the OVAs, so there’s not a lot of fresh content. Hopefully they’ll wrap up the story at the end of this series and never revisit it again.

So what’s the next series that KyoAni will do to avoid doing Haruhi season 2?

  5. Dr.Heinous says:

Apparently I am a bad person. This weekend I will get DrHeinous.com operational again. Though I may have to perform a bit of surgery on that machine as one of the fans has become rather loud; it may be about to go out.

‘So what’s the next series that KyoAni will do to avoid doing Haruhi season 2?’

    Clannad-the next generation

    Lucky Star babies

    Kanon 2068

An adaptation of a napkin covered in doodles they did during a long business lunch

Hmmm… they’ve got K-ON! lined up for the spring season, though I doubt it will run for more than 13 episodes with only two volumes of the manga released so far. After that, there are still three Key works which haven’t been animated, so look for OVAs or TV specials of Tomoyo After and Planetarian, plus a Little Busters! TV series which should run for at least as many episodes as Clannad. Once Key finishes their current project, Re-write, KyoAni can adapt that too. If they have any gaps to fill, there’s always Lucky Star: The College Years or Full Metal Panic: We Promise He’s Actually Dead This Time.

  8. Wonderduck says:

I would pay good money to see Kanon 2068

  9. Clannad — the really, REALLY sad story line
Lucky Star — the college years
    Lucky Star — Akira spinoff
    Lucky Star — Minoru spinoff

  10. Ubu Roi says:

I think I’d buy the Akira spinoff. She was the best thing about the show.

  11. AvatarADV says:

Please, for the love of GOD, no Akira spinoff.

Early on, balance is pretty critical in Valkyria – each class has a role that it’s good at and they’re pretty terrible outside those roles. (Also, early on, snipers are pretty useless…)

Once you’ve leveled the classes up some, and invested some of your cash in better weapons, you get more flexibility. Your scouts get a lot better at combat, your shocktroopers can take out opponents in cover, lancers even get mortars if you want to set them up that way. And the snipers get to the point where they just… don’t… miss.

Watched a bunch of Index over the weekend. Glad they’re not overplaying the “biting loli!” thing. It’s giving me the same kind of vibe as Busou Renkin, honestly. For a series with as much fighting as this one, so far there’s only one actual “bad guy”… just a bunch of good guys who don’t necessarily like each other much. Kanzaki’s got an interesting “asymmetrical pant leg length” design that works, for once. Not totally recommended, but pretty good, no?

  12. Ubu Roi says:

I like Kanazaki, but there was just too much I couldn’t buy about this show. The protagonist has total amnesia and yet manages to keep everyone in the dark? Index’s friends never figured out that they were being lied to and her curse didn’t work that way? In the end, what wore me down were the details like that combined with wall-of-text levels of exposition. KNOWING that nothing was going to happen in a scene because someone was’nt through talking yet. Fingernails on a blackboard.

  13. Andrew F. says:

Hopefully they’ll wrap up the story at the end of this series and never revisit it again.

And less than a week after I write that, they announce a movie.

    Hmmm.

Y’know, I really hope KyoAni never makes another season of Haruhi.
